  • Started budget bookshelf crossovers today.

Right now, they are not soldered and the large coil is the wrong one, still waiting for my delivery from Erse.

I may stand one of the two air cores up on it's side just because, even though rationally I know that problems will be minimal, if any.

Drivers are the Dahlquist 5.5" woofer and the Atlantic Technologies 1" Dome tweeter with oval faceplate.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Modeled FR and phase, 6 degrees off axis in the vertical and 8.5 degrees off axis in the horizontal at a listening distance of 0.75 meters. This is where I spend most of my time when listening to music at my PC.

Lookin good. Looks like my first crossover, but you know... good. ;) My first time around I did through hole on plexiglass. Was pretty neat. Yours looks much nicer and cleaner tho.

We'll see how nice they end up after the soldering iron + my shaky hand + clear plastic all meet

Thank you for the kind words.

I can tell you from experience, it gets smelly at that point. Not as bad as cutting it with a saw, but still stinky, heh.

Well, I only melted one little spot on the Plexiglas, and they ain't so pretty as they were with no solder, wires or glue but I got it done.

Looks good to me man. I tried to make my most recent crossover boards pretty. I kind of did but I'm a functional guy, eventually I just gave up and laid em out in a functional manner on pegboard and did point to point wiring on top of the pegboard. I guess when it comes to function they're a thing of beauty. Heh

Thought I would post some pics of the drivers, since PE doesn't do them justice on their site
Front view of the Dahlquist woofer:

                  Rear view of the woofer:

                  The tweeter:

I brought the tweeter to work and put it on the stone to measure the radius of the left and right sides. It is ~53 mm. The thickness is 4 mm. Overall dimensions are 70mm x 54 mm. The four corners are radiused at ~ 8 mm or so.

I'll crack out the router hopefully even this weekend and do some preliminary cuts to double check.

Started cutting today. My first attempt at flush mounting odd shaped drivers.

Sawdust covering everything. Have to do a good cleaning before I mount anything

I am thinking of a preliminary listen as early as tomorrow.

Both cabinets assembled and waiting slightly warmer weather to give them a coat of primer so I can start sanding and find the high/low spots:

First layer of filler along seams and nail holes. Sand, then re-apply if necessary otherwise it is off to the glazing putty stage:

Still pondering finish, although I am leaning towards either all satin black or a satin black/green two-tone job.

OK, Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat #3 and the glaze putty is on. Tomorrow night - sand and primer :D
