        Re: dlneubec's creations

Dan, I wondered if you wouldn't mind fielding a few questions about your Blades project now that they are complete.

        1. After your listening sessions, how have they performed compared to your expectations at the start of the project?

        2. Do you feel your experiment with the narrow baffle made a substantial difference? Has it really 'open up' the sound a bit?

        3. How is the bass performance and was the added time, planning, materials and effort worth implementing a TL design over a standard vented/sealed configuration in your opinion?

        4. What would you have changed, if anything?

        5. What have you learned good/bad to take from this project?

Thanks and congrats once again on a beautiful design. Its inspired me to build an identical cabinet in my project (using different drivers). The top section will be an MTM with the lower section housing the bass drivers in a vented configuration.

What I would change about yours is the spacing of your mids to tweeter. You need to place them closer. Normally, I allow about 0.25" between driver frames, unless the xover point is very low between mids and woofers.

            Good point.

They actually will be. I had a hard time trying to make a truncated frame for the W4's :o

CTC spacing between the mids and tweeter will be minimal. (In fact the spacing in that model between frame edges is 0.25" )

They have exceeded my expectations in every way. They are the most forgiving speaker I have designed as far as flexibility to play all kinds of material and also from a room placement standpoint.

I think it was a great success. I believe it improves the power response and the soundstage. These speakers sound almost as good in the next room as they do in the room they are in and sound similar in many ways to my open baffle and omni designs, yet they are designed to be placed agains the wall. They sound very much the same anywhere in the room.

I'm sold on TL's. I think the bass is more forgiving in the room and that it loads the room differently. They don't seem to boom as often as ported designs seem to. If the driver is one that benefits from a TL, I will likely use them in most of my designs. The RSS265 requires a very long port to tune low and that in and of itself causes issues with ported designs. I think they have the potential for less sound reflecting back through the cone than a sealed design.

I might have done the black paint differently, but from a design or sound standpoint, I can't think of anything I'd change, except if money was no object, there might be some different crossover components that I would use. There is nothing about them I don't like, excpet perhaps how much they weigh!

You can have great success with drivers you have on your shelf or drivers you are reusing from a prior project. When doing a 4-way, I think an active low end is probably a must.

Thanks for the compliments! I try hard and don't give up easily. Your design looks great. I hope I get to see them/hear them some day.
