    Re: Other's Projects I've Built

OK, finally getting around to posting pictures of this build. Longest build in my limited history (started 6/2010, finished 10/2012).
Thanks to Zaph for a great design. I enjoyed making them a great deal. Next I will be adding a center channel and then some similar rears.

Here are my curved version of a set of Zaph's ZDT3.5s:

Build log here (photobucket messed up the order, oh well):

You do really nice work Andy! All those speakers look professional to say the least. Remarkable craftsmanship.

I thought I would finally get around to adding pics of the stands I built for this pair of Wolf's PCs I use at work. I used the left over oak slats from the original build.
The stands really help with the directionality of the design. They really change sound when not pointed at the ears.

To me, they sound better on the stands. Actually, I wish I had angled them a little bit higher, as they are still pointed a little below my ears while seated.

This design really does work well for my desktop at work, where I can't ever really turn it up. Simple and effective, the engineering way (sometimes ;-).

    AK,

Thanks for sharing. You've built a really nice collection over the years. Your choices of finishes are spectacular. I'm looking forward to your next speaker!

Hah, gotcha. Looks like you made the PCs in about the same dimensions as I did. I have never been a big fan of cubes proportionally, except in some subs.
Wolf's Rubyks are a key exception to that statement. Those and his Tesseracts (sp), too.

I figured the Rat Rod pertained to a minimalist attention to details/finish. For small builds, pre-finished engineered flooring works pretty well, though you have to use mitered edges. I find the initial gue-up of all mitered edges to be very difficult. I tried the painters-tape roll up, but couldn't get it to align very well, hence the grinding off of the edges to make it look nicer.

PS- you did stuff them, right?
Yes, they have a handful of polyfil.

I figured that with pre-finished material and grinding off the edges to hide the mistakes, they fell neatly in the Rat Rod field. ;-)

    First finished build for 2012:

Another set of Wolf's PC speakers, but this time in the Rat Rod category.

I used some left over Brazilian Cherry hardwood flooring. Having the material pre-finished really cuts down on the build time.

Mitered edges all around and simple 45' chamfer to clean up any mis-alignment from the glue-up. Now these are destined for the fishing camp, I decided the previous set was too nice for that environment and needed a true Rat Rod set.

    Thanks Wolf.

    Andy.

Well, I had finished another set of Wolf's PC speakers a month or two ago and just hadn't got around to posting them.

I used some good cherry (?) void-less ply given to me by a neighbor. I also decided to use the black coned version of these drivers.

Once again, thanks Wolf for the great design. These are intended for a Cousins fishing cabin along with a lepei amp.

    Andy.

I'm curious how the slightly higher power was sounding than the one I built.

    Later, and those look great!

Well, I didn't get to run them in the same kind of room. Out in the garage (3-car) and up off the floor, they can't pressurize the space like the previous ones can in their rooms (~12x10x9). The room gain and corner loading up in the girls room really gives this design a boost. It does sound very good, as do the Rubyks, off the 3100. It can really get the 8" passive and the TB sub moving.

I think the Keiga is a really good way to run the 2.1 system without another amp. Since most kids use phone/mp3 player/laptop, etc as source these days it make good sense and reduces the desktop space required. It is just quite a bit more expensive. I would have liked to try the PE 2.1 amp, but it is too tall for these subs. The Keiga just fit.

    Andy.

    Re: Other's Projects I've Built

    Hi All,

Finished my third, and last, set of Wolf's Rubyks and my second Biumph sub for my niece heading off to Villanova. I have now run out of the drivers for the Rubyks, which is too bad with how nice they sound and how well they work as a small room 2.1 setup. I will have to do something different when my son's turn comes up for a music system.

I changed the dimensions a bit on the Biumph sub to accommodate the use of a Keiga 2.1 amp (increased the depth 3").

Thanks for all the great designs and personal help, Wolf.

    Best regards, Andy.

Theresa, I bet if you posted on some of the boards (like this one) that you'd find a fellow speaker builder that would cut driver cut outs for you.

Beautiful speakers. I wish I knew someone close by who could make me baffles like yours. I have to restrict myself to drivers for which there are pre-cut baffles. I am currently enamored with ScanSpeaks and Madisound has pre-cut baffles for them. I had baffles cut for $107 so I could use PEs curved cabinets with my Etons and he did not do a perfect job.
