  • A new look for an old friend.

I added a new baffle to the brown bedroom sub I built last year:

This is what it used to look like:

I also added a modified Foster plate amp, replacing the AudioSource that was in there. Less power but a more appropriate boost circuit.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

is that amp pretty easy to mod?

sorry johnny, don't want to step on your toes or hi-jack your build thread.

the amp is simple to mod, jacks instructions are very clear. if you look at my thread about the attic subs http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...d.php?t=216388 you can see i made the 2 resistors needed to change boost external, as i wasn't sure if i was going to need to make changes. if you need any more info feel free to contact me.

i am sure johnny can explain also.

sub looks good with the black/brown contrast. huge fan of brown, although hard to walk into home depot and get just brown, names like chocolate kiss, or deep fawn? wish they had the basic pack of crayola for names so guys could figure out paint and stains. ok my rant on your thread is done.

Re: A new look for an old friend.

On this one, I just removed one resistor with a pair of small dykes, and soldered a jumper over a capacitor. I used some 20awg solid copper wire (available in the picture hanging section of many stores). The degree of difficulty, I would say, is directly proportionate to the amount of caffeine you consume. I drink a lot, so I shake like a dog pooping peach-pits so it wasn't uber-easy for me I am quite capable at soldering, but the cap that needs to be jumped is kind of in a tight spot, at least for my big ol' meathooks and caffeine habit.

I'll fire it up tomorrow and see if I didn't screw the amp up

Thomas, I feel your pain. I wanted "medium brown, not too shiny" when I did this last year. I ended up with "Espresso, satin".

Thank you for the kind words and good job on the external resistors. I have two more of those amps, I may have to experiment a little.

Re: A new look for an old friend.

" Like a dog pooping peach pits" ...... That's good- a new one for me and I can testify! 2 Pots on some days.

            The contrast does look good.

Glad the subject of Jacks Amps came up and don't want to steal your fire on thread. Promise to avoid such in future.

I have 4 of the TB 740 8" long throws and am driving myself nuts trying to figure out what to do with them. I bought the plans for Bills Horns and have read enough testimony to believe they are foundation shakers but still can't see where I could put them in my living room. I know I'll try them for planned HT in basement. I'm leaning towards making 4 small subs with these and running Jacks amps. Price can't be beat but do they have enough power to make that 8" give me any volume or head room? 2nd problem is figuring out how to wire 4 - 4ohm subs in different locations to a single sub out on an HT receiver. Likely easy for those more knowledgeable than I .

Any input? I'd like to get these built by this Fall and don't want to see those amps sell out.

the only paint company i found that makes "brown" is rusto.

on my amps i used 3 wire computer fan extension wires (leftovers, of course). they have a black, red, and yellow wire with a small plug. i just eliminated the yellow wire (also used the solid wire piece from the plug, to jump the cap) soldered one end to the board that went to the female plug, then connecter male end of plug to external terminal for resistor change. vice versa on the second resistor (so i would always know what plug goes where). that way if i need to remove the plastic back cover on the amp i can just unplug everything (as the speaker wires are plugged into the board). one of my amps has a very slight hum, don't know if it something i did. didn't test them before the mods.

Re: A new look for an old friend.

I would say 100 watts isn't enough, especially considering how much headroom you will use up in boosting that driver to take advantage of it's excursion. It's a nice little amp, but it really wasn't designed for low efficiency drivers like the TB stuff.

I would just lay in some cash and buy four of the Dayton 240 watt amps, the ones with boost.

As far as connecting multiple subs to a single output, just start stacking up RCA "Y" adapters, I guess.
