  • This weeks builds: Overnight Sensation MTM, Shticks, Datyon 8" DVC Sub

well, here are some pics of the speakers I finished up this weekend.

1st: My OVernight Sensation MTM Center channel

features (2) 1" x 4" ports, one out each side
Zebra wood veneer to match the OS's i built a few weeks ago

2nd: One of my Shticka. I dont have all the drivers for the other one yet

    It has a 1 7/8" x 4 3/4" front port.
I offset the tweeeter 3/4" just to be diffeent
the bracing fors 2 shelves below each 5.25" sub. this is where the crossovers sit. I wired it so it could be bi-amped if i ever wanted. SInce the baffle is not removable, the MTM crossover is in the lower part as well, and i just drilled small holes to pass the wire up and then hot glued them shut. The upper part is stuffed with poly, and i have just a small hand full on the top and bottom of the lower section.
Veneer again is Zebra wood, back is painted textured black. I will eventually do some based out of zebra hardwood for these

3rd: Dayton 8" DVC Sub w/ dayton 100 watt plate amp

I have used this combination in several boxes, but decided to try it in something smaller this time

    box is 14" x 14" x 18"
    port is 2.5" x 8.5"
3/4" roundover on all vertical edges
    1" tall rubber feet

If you look at the amp, I had to make a plate as my CNC messed up and cut the cutout too big. I plan on cutting the back off and attaching a new back with the amp recessed 3/4"

I have a 2" x 3/4" brace going front to back, and side to side.

Sub sounds good, but port noise gets petty bad below 32 hrz or so.

      Nik,

Love the Shticks (and the rest of your great work, too)! Let us know how you like them once you get the other done and get a chance to listen to them for a while. I built a set and really like them. Great midrange and go pretty deep, too.

      Your work always impresses.
      Andy.

i may have to redo the corssover on the one i have done, as i did not lay them out well, and have a few inductors too close to each other. When i was testing it, i was impressed with the bass, but the cross over offers several areas that can be adjused. I my need to change some values to get them perfect.

ANy recommendatins on the cross over for near wall placement in a small room?

I used the "dead room" resistor value and have the A3S drivers in my Shticks. For the center channel Shtick I used the "live room" values and prefer that in my fairly small room. If I ever get around to it, I would change the mains to the "live room" values.
I have my Shticks about 10 - 12" from the back wall and prefer them closer to the wall than further out. Helps with the bass and makes them more balanced to my ears. When they were further out, the mids seemed to be more forward.
Nothing scientific, just what I have found while listening.

          Andy.

Nick, your listening levels must be higher than mine I have not had any complaints about port noise in my small-size/low tune 8" DVC build.

That Zebra stuff looks just craaazy!

oh, i have only noticed it with test tones with the volume up. I alway test the boxes just to check. I have not noticed it at all in even normal to loud movie watching

Awesome! I am very happy with the performance/price of the Datum subwoofer. Have I heard better? Oh yeah. Have I built better? Oh yeah. At the price point, though... Hard to beat.
