  • New 3-way MTW Bookshelf Project.

    My new 3-way bookshelf project, 1/2" MDF, 1/4" ply extra for baffle, skinned in Phillippine Mahogany.

    Drivers are:

    T= http://www.parts-express.com/pe/psho...number=275-070

    M= http://www.parts-express.com/pe/psho...number=299-228

    W= http://www.parts-express.com/pe/psho...number=295-305

    The x-o points will be 500, and 5000. Target tuning is 41hz and 88db @ 8ohms. I will assemble and listen then might go ahead and add a 2"w X 3"l port. With a Qts. of .33 on the W's I'm sure they will need it.

    They aren't as dark as they appear in these first couple of pics.

    Doh! Will absolutely cut the holes prior to finishing on future projects! The screw heads holding the Jasper jig to the router caused scratching. I guess the plastic bottom of the router is slightly thicker than the Jasper. I ground them- the screw heads- down a bit (after the fact!).

    The new Craftsman router!:D:D:D The old Hitatchi needs bearings now and I was looking to get away from the 1/2" to 1/4" converter collets. The new one has both size collets, and there is a world of difference. No more tightning in the middle of a cut. Not to mention virtual ellimination of the possibility of throwing the bit!

    Never could get the baffles correct after cutting the driver holes- there were micro cuts to the wood. I could get the finish dark enough to cover the scratches, but then the finish would not be even in surface. Or I could get it even but not hide the scratches... so, 7 coats of black later...

    These will be the tops and bottoms.

    I hope to get the cabinets and the x-os completed this week-end and get to some critical listening!

      you need to partition these? where would you place the port considering they are for bookshelve?
      they look good so far.

        Thanks, guys. They are a little deep (18") for bookshelf speakers, I just didn't know how to categorize them; maybe just 'speakers'? In the last pic of the cabs, you can see the mid partition in ply. If it is needed, I will put the port in the back.

          Any plans for matching stands?

            Very nice build so far and good choice of drivers. Did you plan these for just music listening or home theater? Happen to know if the Peerless 850102 comes in a shielded version for a center channel? Have you planned out a center?

              No plans for stands; My stereo, speakers and TV sit on a console frame.

              Thanks, it's been (and is) a learning experience. Music and light ht use. Not sure about the Peerless shielded. I think I've seen one @ PE in the +- $40 range.

              Once I learned digital tvs aren't affected by a speaker's magnetic field, I determined I wouldn't let shielding be a factor in my driver selection.

              I've got a spare 12" I have considered making a passive sub with. My listening room is small enough, I'm almost at near-field range as it is, so no plans for a center.

                Rob, I hear you on the shielded/unshielded deal... I no longer run a CRT in my living room so it has actually opened up a whole new world WRT driver selection

                  Last I saw a tube tv for sale, new, was early last year. It was at Best Buy, about mid-way on the bottom shelf, in the first aisle, on the right. That's a dark aisle to begin with. It looked to be a 19 or 20 inch for around $135, or so. They really disappeared off the shelves within a year or two. There were none last I checked, about six months ago.

                    I dont own a Crt anymore either. The hard drives in my video game system, Blu-Ray player and DVR are why I take precautions.

                      Ah ha...I imagine a foot or so would be ok. The internal power supplies in those components probably throw out higher magnetic fields when powered, than your driver magnets do.

                        +1 I tried corrupting a hard drive with a speaker magnet by attaching it directly to said magnet and nothing bad happened.

                          I need to finish soldering the xos tomorrow and re-stuff the polyfill, then they will be done! Gave a listen with a boat-load of alligator clipped wires for a few hours tonight and will be happy with them as is. I never owned speakers which played best with the EQ on my receiver zeroed flat, all the way across, before.

                          They play every low tone I can find in my music collection. The lowest, I don't know the hz, but it's on an electronic album and really makes walls rattle in the room! Thank you, PE!

                          Here's some pics...
