  • Magician's Assistant - Portable PA

This might belong in the prosound area, but some of you might get off on it. A self contained mini PA setup for one of my buddies who's a part time stage magician. Lot's of fun, cheap easy build. Brief write-up on the Magician's Assistant on my site.

Where are you John Galt? I may not be worthy, but I'm ready.

Very cool. I used to do some stand up magic as well as close up, but havent really done much since I got married 5 years ago. When I started this hobby, I often thought about simple PA systems I could have used or even built myself to accommodate being a magician.

      Thanks for sharing Lou!

      May I suggest a modification?
That big open space behind the peizos...close it up just behind the back of the peizos, then build a fold down trap door on the back of the speaker cab.
Now he has two useable cabinets to store his speaker wires and cordless mic. Heck, maybe even keep the lavalier reviever permanently mounted inside the one with the amp (via velcro) to make setup and tear down even easier!

Can I get some more information about the grille material? Is it flexible or stiff enough to afford driver protection? I'm researching a grill material for my pro PA project too.

I've thought about that space, but I'm leaving it up to Wayne to decide. Right now they are the "handles". I got him plastic corners and a set of split apart hinges. He can figure out what works best for him. (Even a foam "plug" will work.) He wants me to do a table for close up work some time too.

"Pet Screen" can be found at any decent hardware store. It's just super heavy duty window screen with a fiberglass core and a heavy plastic coating. Supposed to keep your dog from scratching through the patio door. It's not rigid and would need a lot of support around the edges. If you're looking for protection from drunks and flying beer bottles, it may not be enough

Well think of doing a show at a Chuck E Cheese with a Blues Brothers twist.
Some of the prosound guys will tell you what kind of abuse their gear gets.
Sugared up kids vs redneck drunks...:D Hmm that might not be so different.:p

Excellent build! I've been contemplating something similar with one of those Apex Jr. amps. Good work!

We tried these with the little mic mixer & an IPOD. Surprisingly good sound (and volume) for no crossover!
