  • Biumph and Fountek FR89EX/8 ohm 2.1 System

Just wanted to show off my latest build. The Founteks are in Madisound's recommended 1.5 liter vented enclosure, and the Biumph is built per Wolf's plans.

Overall I'm very pleased, but I'm a rank amateur so take that for what it's worth. I have a PE mic on the way and I hope to make some measurements soon. Next up will be a pair of Dragon Foals. I want to hear how the Founteks compare to a known design

Thanks for the sub plans, Wolf! I really appreciate your contributions to the forum.

How are those Fountek's?? I was wanting to build some small computer speakers to use here at work (have to fit in my backpack). I was considering the cheaper shiny ones, though.

Cool. Really like the color and mat finish.

Nice execution! I'll say that the color is...interesting;)

Looks good there, bud! Nice execution, and you're very welcome!

          Is that olive-drab/military-green?

Let me know if you require any pointers on the DF, and please keep us posted with pictures!

            Thanks, guys.

greywarden - I'm really pleased with the Founteks - especially considering the small box they are playing in. I measured both with my WT3 and they were spot-on the factory specs.

Wolf - Olive Drab it is. I'm fixing up a ratty old motorcycle and had a few cans laying around. :D BTW - how much stuffing do you recommend? I placed a few handfuls in enough to mostly fill the box. I didn't compress the stuffing nor loosen it up much either.

On to the Dragon Foals next week. I'm trying to decide if I should build a nice box, one like I used on this build, or maybe even put them into a piece of 6" dia PVC pipe.

Very nice! Be perfectly at home in an old "rat rig".
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

You can't change the size of the face unless you rework the design. If you lengthwise the PVC cut, you can make them taller and place the port on the front, but that would look funny.

My vote is for nice boxes.

In case someone was thinking I was insulting the finish in any way, keep in mind my father spent over twenty years in the military running a Rat Rig.

I apologize if it appeared I was making light of the olive drab finish.

Re: Biumph and Fountek FR89EX/8 ohm 2.1 System

Advice: Build the Dragon Foals in an enclosure exactly the same size and shape (finishes may vary) as the original. The shape of the baffle can have a serious effect in the lower midrange, and using a differently-shaped baffle can cause some issues. The most critical dimension to maintain is the width but the height can also affect the low-mids.

Okay, stick to the plans it is.

I measured the Founteks tonight. Keep in mind it's my first-ever attempt to measure a speaker and it was taken in my basement with my family moving around upstairs. However, I measured one of my Overnight Sensations and it was nice and flat, so maybe I'm on the right track.

Is that the fountek or the OS system? Either way, it's pretty nice and from a voicing standpoint probobly really nice to listen to on axis.

                            This is the Fountek.

It would appear that this driver is small enough to not be affected by the dreaded off axis issues of FR range drivers. I'll leave the discussions of energy storage to someone else....if it sounds good then it is good!:D
