A little more progress and a few pics. Got the Woofer baffles done and ready to go, with hurricane nuts. Loaded up the woofer cabinets with some acoustic treatment- 3 diferent types of foam and some fiberfill stuffing yet to go in. I'll be drilling the holes for the binding posts and getting some wiring done here shortly. Also, I'll do the same for the MTM cabinets.

I would be concerned with the amount of chamfering on the rear of the driver openings from what I can see. That said, as long as when you put the driver in its hole there is enough line-of-sight to the rear of the cone, you are ok.

Good point. I actually have been meaning to do this (had it on my list). I can defintely go a bit deeper and wider on the chamfer so I'll give it a go.
I can see the area for the back of the cone 'ok' right now, but I'd like to give it a bit more space since I'm able to.

The one on the right works well, goes through material quickly and not too hard to control. It's not pretty when you're done, but it's quick and can go where a router can possibly not go. Especially if you've already mounted the front baffle! Oops.

Anyway, nice job and keep the pics coming if you don't mind.

Oh, and by the way, the polyfill works better if you take it out of the bag.

Thanks anunnaki. Its been challenging for sure, especially for a first build. I had originally planned to do these vented. However, because my internal volume will net just under 3 cubic feet before driver displacement and stuffing, Im inclined to go sealed on this one. I tested with another cabinet, same dimensions, and sealed they can still play very low. Plus, I'll almost certainly be doing some IB subs in the room with these so I figure I might get a slightly cleaner sound with the sealed enclosure anyway.

Drilled the holes for the binding posts after veneering the back panel and started glue up of the front baffles...

In the second picture you'll see a little overhang from the baffle to the box. That will be flush trimmed after glue up is complete.

You would be correct on the veneer/glue.
I also tested some stain on the cherry veneer. Its a Minwax walnut stain and it really shows the figuring in this wood. Should mate up well with the black top cabinet. I got both of the lower cabinet baffles glued on (just did the second) and I'll hopfully get the top ones done tomorrow. Then its on to lots of sanding and prep for the rest of the veneer and paint. I need to do some research on what products/method to use for getting a really good piano black finish. Time to read up on Dan's thread again

These look great Cptn! I wish my project had a little more outward style.

Do you like the Evercoat better than Bondo? I always find body filler a pain to work with though it seems to work better than the alternatives.....

Can't wait to see these wrapped up!

Thanks Joey, Im enjoying watchin your build unfold as well. If you put a nice veneer on those, they'll have plenty of eye-appeal!

As for the Evercoat better than Bondo question...In a word: ABSOLUTELY. For me its easy to mix and apply and has reasonable drying times for workability. It also seems to have less pinholes and such when dried/sanded. But, the single biggest difference in these 2 products is easily the sandability. The Evercoat Rage Gold has some fillers in it that make the sanding FAR easier than the Bondo mix. Plus it looks cool :p

Regarding the Rage Gold body filler -- I've seen others recommend Rage Gold highly, and from what I've been able to learn through an Internet search, it is widely regarded as the best product. Bondo, of course, is widely criticized. Were you able to find a one quart can? My automotive paint suppler only carries it in a one gallon can. It would have to have a super-long shelf life if I were to get my money's worth out of a can that size, and it's about $65 per gallon.

I got the gallon can myself as well. For reference of shelf life, I've had mine for over two years now and it flowed, mixed and hardened as normal with the latest usage. Also, you get ALOT of use out of a gallon. Just make sure you reseal the top well after usage by giving it a good tapping with the hammer around the edges. And when using, extract the amount you'll use for mixing and then seal it back up right away.

Started veneering...
I had to fix a little gap between the top edge of the baffle and the top of the bass enclosure. Wasnt quite even and it would have caused issues with the veneer so out came the body filler and sandpaper again. Got the edge damn near perfect with a couple coats and a good amount of sanding. Went ahead and applied veneer to the backs, sides and front chamfered edges this weekend. The fronts will be next (should be challenging with cutting out the speaker holes) followed by the tops. Havent decided yet if I'll veneer the bottoms...I have enough veneer , but they'll never really be seen, so...not sure yet. I've had a few issues with some cracking (yes, I used the raw veneer, and I was warned. I dont think it will be too bad though, and hey...its my first attempt so its a good learning experience), but I plan on using some wood filler for those spots. I need to test it out first on some scrap along with the stain to see which of the 2 color versions of filler will work best. On another note, I've had pretty good results with just using the (very sharp) veneer saw to trim the edges. They just need a very light high grade sanding for a little smoothing afterwards and they sit really nicely. Anyway...onto the pics...
