This all would depend on the fillers ability to stand up to the router bit.

Also, why do people cut holes before they veneer? I find it much easier to cut the recess and mounting hole after veneer is on. Tear out is not really an issue with any decent bit.

I think it would create a heck of alot of dust...but then so does MDF. Im not sure if Id have issues with it chipping/cracking out as I havent tried it. I doubt it but you never know... Id just have to go very slow with the bit. IF I decide to do a recess on these which Im not sure I'll do...what I would do is take a seperate piece of mdf and route out a circle with a slightly larger hole than the outside diameter of the driver, then clamp that board as a template over the hole in the project. Then, use a brass guide with the spiral downcut to remove the material for the recess. Should work very nicely.
I just dont know if I want to take the time and risk further errors and repairs to try it...:o

As for the cutting before veneering...Well...for this very reason. Screwups can be fixed before veneer is applied.

      I see your point.

I have made a similar mistake, but it was more fixable in my case. I now use scrap to cut a recess and mounting hole in 1st and test fit the driver. Then I can veneer before cutting. It has save my rear end numerous times and takes the pain out of trimming veneer from the cut recess(especially on smaller drivers with thin flanges).

BTW, great job on the fix. The build looks great and I do not think surface mounting the woofers will make any/much difference. Keep the pics coming.

Thanks Chris. Yeah, the template/test fit is a good idea and one I'm sure I'll employ on the next build

Got the MTM baffles glued up yesterday and started sanding the enclosures. I'll need to do some filling and sanding to get them where I want and then they'll need to be sealed and sanded more. Since they are getting painted, there will be lots of sanding done to ensure a smooth finish.

EDIT: Oh, and I also chamfered the back of the MTM baffles much deeper as was recommended, before glue up.

They are testing my patience by making me go very slowly paying attention to the details at the end here so that finishing will go well.

Man, if there is anything I have learned about finish work, is that the outcome is all in the preparation. Make sure you get them as pretty as possible in rough form to make the finish as smooth as possible.

For sure! After I get them smoothed out with filler and sanding, Im going to use Lunchmoney's method of coating the enclosures with 3 coats of 50/50 Titebond II and water mix and then sand smooth before doign the primer. Should really give these things a nice sealed surface for paint.

That's my latest method, though I am going to attempt the trenching method for the seams as well if I decide to paint mine....

I've done some boo-boo's too. It happens.

Re: My (in progress) project *pics too*

Just a quick update...I finished up applying the veneering and also did a bit of prep and filling on the mtm enclosures. Just a bit more work on those and they will be ready for sealing/sanding and paint. I have had some cracking/splitting in spots with the veneer which I kind of expected being that its raw wood and its my first time. I think I can make these look pretty good nonetheless with a little wood filler and sanding before the prestain conditioner and stain/finishing. We'll see how it goes

EDIT: You can also see in some of the pics how much deeper I went with the chamfering on the mid cutouts. Should be much better now.
                          And a couple of pics:
