It looks like they'll need some sanding, but not bad for a first time using these products. Actually, good job! You do have me scared that you will use power tools for the clearcoat. If you plan on using the orbital sander, please don't sand near the edges...be really careful. Remember it only takes one slip to mess up all that paint work. Good luck, and please keep us updated on the sanding too. I'm anxious to see that part of the project as well.

      Thanks!
Yeah, I was thinking about just doing the wetsanding by hand and maybe using the orbital for buffing/polishing with a wool pad at the end. Im concerned about the same things you are so that seems to be the way to go.

I did the wetsanding on the painted MTM enclosures. I gotta say...when you go from a glossy shiny look and then see this after you wetsand, its a bit un-nerving.

I wetsanded with 3M Wetordry paper and started with 1000 grit, then 1500, then 2000. A finish with less orangepeel/runs could probably start higher than 1000. Around 1200-1500 would be fine. Anyway, once I finished the 1st one, I had to give it a quick round of buffing to be sure I wasnt crazy. I used the Meguiars Mirror Glaze (105) "Professional Ultra-Cut Compound. Its an extra heavy cut abrasive to help remove sanding marks, swirls, holograms and scratches. Here's what it looks like after a quick application to one of the panels:

Now, lets compare that to the original finish after BC/CC and without any wetsanding and buffing:

And a side by side comparison really shows it too. Look at the towel they are sitting on. The wetsanded and buffed enclosure is much more clear and reflective.

Im working today on getting the other enclosure wetsanded and then I'll wrap up the buffing and polishing of both. Im using a lambswool buffing pad with the cutting compound, and will follow that up with with a foam pad and Meguiars "Professional Show Car Glaze" pure polish. ;)

Been following from a distance, just catching up on your build. Those are looking mighty fine.

My aging eyes combined with an imperfect "personal search function" doesn't allow me to find what type of veneer you used, lol. What type might that be?

It looks great so far! Another warning though... the heavy cut compound and wool pad are coarse, but it's hard to burn the paint. When you use the glaze and foam pad, be careful of the temperature. It won't take much off, but it gets much hotter right away. It's an unwritten law to use slower speeds with a foam pad than a wool pad. You can also add a little water to thin the product and help it not get too hot.

Thank you both. Its been a long time coming so it was nice to actually get some tunes through one of em last night. I put about 1lb of acoustic stuffing in, popped the drivers in (used black hex head screws to pretty it up) and fired away. I think the pair will be pretty sweet. I should have the other one done by about Wednesday. :D

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your hex screws? I picked up a couple of plastic containers at Harbor Freight. I was just wondering if there was another economical source where I could get just the ones I need. Lowes is ridiculous!

Second time. Gorgeous. Not quite as nice as yours.

I've been checking out your build thread as it has progressed. They are really looking great.
I just read what you said about the wet sanding. When you first sand it and have not buffed it out , it always looks as if it will never be shiny again. Being your first time I bet you thought , holy crap I just ruined my paint job lol. But now you buffed them , I bet your glad you did. Great job and I hope they sound as great as they look.
                          Thanks ,
                          JB

Not at all. I picked them up from an ebay seller. Thats the cheapest way to go and they are usually sold in bulk by the pound. Just make sure u get the right length your looking for
