Yeah, I'm kind of leaning toward a higher build type of paint. The whole "sanding for hours on end" deal doesn't appeal to me at all. I figure the high build paint will help with that.

No matter what you use, prep is the key. A high build paint over a crappy prep job will still look bad.

Fill, sand, prime. Don't try to do it all at once. Repeat once or twice.

I am running into a (major) problem though. I'm running this motherboard in my computer. I'm getting major interference into the sub though (sub only, not the speakers..... or at least I'm not hearing any). It's almost like a nasty, scratchy white noise. If I move my mouse and perform an action on the computer, it changes pitches and you can tell it's directly related to the mouse actions. I'm using 3.5mm out from my computer, to the RCA input on my Dayton 240w plate amp. I've tried 2 different 3.5mm to RCA cables, and both have the exact same results. If I use my iPod as a source, I get no interference, so I know it's the computer.

Any ideas on the interference issue?

Make sure you have the latest MB audio drivers. Google "optimize audio" for whatever OS you're using.

Yes, it's called "bus noise." Some sound cards and chips have it worse than others. Built-in mobo chips tend to have it pretty bad, in my experience. Most dedicated sound cards don't have it (or it's so low it's undetectable). Except for the first few generations of Sound Blasters (we're talking 1990 here) I haven't heard it on any of Creative's products. Also, any pro-sumer cards and USB interfaces like M-Audio, Tascam, Lexicon, Alesis will not have bus noise. In fact, the noise floor is usually blissfully low on most of these. Do your homework; there are some great ones for $99 and less. You might also be able to get a good deal on one at eBay from someone with upgrade-itis

Well, here are a couple of things that are on my mind right now:

1. I really want to incorporate a high pass filter into the OS's. They don't need to be playing down to 60hz, and at higher volumes, I'd rather not risk anything. That's what I have the sub for. They really struggle on some (most) of the rap/hip hop songs (which is expected). I think it's just a resistor and/or a capacitor in line with the speaker output?

2. I'm getting more port noise that I would like. I'm not bashing Wolf at all here (I went off of his Attitudes build), but, in my relative inexperienced opinion, the port is too small. I use my "favorite" online port area calculator, and it calls for a 3" port with my parameters. I'm hoping a 3" hole saw will be sufficiently accurate enough for a 3" pvc pipe OD to make the hole bigger


3. My computer is going to be my main source. I let it go to sleep after about 10 minutes. When my computer "wakes up", I got a turn on thump. It was a pretty decent one too. Well, after this turn on thump, my left channel stopped working. After some troubleshooting, it's my computer. I have onboard sound on my motherboard, so it's not something I can necessarily replace. Something must've happened during that turn on thump when the computer "woke up" that it didn't like. I even plugged headphones into it, and only the right channel worked. So, a friend of mine kindly let me use his sound card that he had laying around. He has onboard sound as well, so he doesn't need it. However, I still get interference in the sub, and it's the same noise..... :(

Haha wooooooooooww.........

So I'm digging through my computer case, seeing what the problem might be. I'm unplugging fans left and right, and I get to one of the fans that is part of my cpu heat sink (Corsair H50). One of the fans goes directly to my motherboard. I unplug that fan, and the interference goes away. Well, it goes away so much, that you have to put your ear right up to the cone to hear the very very slight amount of interference that is left.

And, I have an idea on how to open up the port opening more. And, the HPF for the OS's shouldn't be a difficult task at all.

I'm feeling a little better right now haha

If you went with a different tuning and/or volume than in mine, it is possible the vent may chuff. Also- if you are really cranking on the 240W volume knob, it will likely happen.

Yeah, I have a good idea on how I can make the hole bigger with ease, so it's no big deal. I'm probably going to go with a 3" port, which would be 19" long.

I do think there is something messed up with my motherboard though...... like not just audio related.....

If you have a 3" hole saw, drill a hole through a piece of scrap and clamp it where you want the new hole. That way you don't have to worry about not having the pilot drill.

I actually just picked one up from a friend tonight. I'm not sure that a piece of 3" PVC will fit directly into the cutout of a 3" hole saw, but there's only one way to find out.

No, more than one way. How about measuring the PVC and measuring the hole saw?

Another reason to drill a hole in a piece of scrap. If the holes too small I have a rotary rasp you can use.
