  • the Mothman- RSS390-HO sub in truncated pyramid

2nd time I have built a finished cabinet (1st were little truncated pyramids which are now my surrounds). I seem to like this truncated pyramid shape for some reason! 1st time using veneer. Sealed 1.6 cu ft, 3/4" plywood, double thick on back and braced side-to-side. Unbacked walnut burl veneer from http://veneersupplies.com/ applied with Better Bond cold press glue. Bookmatched the veneer to get an interesting design, neighbor pointed out that it looks like the image from the movie the Mothman Prophecies, he was right! Lots of coats of Minwax clear gloss brush-on lacquer (respirator and exhaust fans!!!). Still needs the lacquer rubbed out/ polished/ waxed. Powered by a Parts Express SA1000. Sounds great so far, very deep. Need to find that movie now...

That looks great! Makes me want to try my hands at veneer.

That is one of the most stunning veneer jobs I have seen:eek:.

WOW that reminds me very much of several William Blake paintings. Powerful imagery, there.

          Well done, sir.

            Stunning veneer. Very nice.

When I first saw it, i was thinking, that is WAY to small....then I saw your pumping 1000 watts into it....hehe

I just finished a sub with the same driver, but only 500 watts, MUCH larger enclosure. I am loving the sound. VERY pleased.

Re: the Mothman- RSS390-HO sub in truncated pyramid

Thanks a lot for the compliments! I got some good advice on the main board on what to do. I was really worried about the veneer but veneersupplies.com and Joe the Woodworker had really good product and info. That burl was exactly like in the website pics and totally flat. Their hand-sharpened veneer saw and a steel straightedge made the bookmatching easy. I should have clamped it better at glue-up so I did get some rippling.

I wanted a sealed box for the most flexibility of future use and 1.6cf was the WinISD default for that sub so I assumed that was optimum. Not sure what the SA1000 really puts out as it isn't in danger of causing stuctural damage, but I've seen what looks like xmax and still sounds clean.

On the top I used the trick of a mirror standing on a veneer sheet to choose where to make the bookmatch, I was trying to get a sort of key symbol.

Yeah, I tried that stuff over the summer, just a small test piece. It was the worst-smelling finishing product I've ever used. I almost threw up, and I had to apologize to my wife continuously for the next day (I used it in the garage, but the smell wafted its way into the house). I'm not saying it doesn't work--it might--but you have the right idea with using a respirator and exhaust fans.

The veneer looks wonderful, by the way.
