  • Statement monitors towers.

After lurking a lot and asking a lot I decided to build a pair of Statement monitors. The wife said no to using stands, so I built them as towers.
    So first step sketchup:

    Then to cut:

    Dadoing:

    Dry fit:

    Mid tunnel assembly:

The only pic of the bafle:

    Glued and wired:

As you can see I made 3 compartments, the top one has the original size, the middle houses the XO boards and the bottom was filled with sand and pebbles.
    XO boards:

    In it's unfinished glory:

As of now the speakers are veneered on sides and top, the baffle only has primer. I plan to paint the baffle and back in flat black and cover everything with water based poly.

I used PVA glue on 1 cab and did not like the results, then used contact cement in the other and got slightly better results. I just found a company that imports paper backed veneer, I may try that for the next build.

I plan on adding grills to protect the drivers from dust. At this point I have 1 temp grill and will do the other tomorrow.

    Template:

    Cardboard skeleton:

Temp grill in place, I should have painted it black...

I drilled the holes for the wires, added some weather strip and then used hot melt glue:

I'm listening some tracks on them and they definitely sound great.

Very, very nice! Is there a reason why you didn't go for the extra woofer and build the Statement Minis? Just wondering.

Router with a 3/8 rabbet bit for the sides and 1/2 straight for the cross rabbets.

I do not have the 18" behind the speakers, so I decided to use the "near wall" Monitors. Plus international shipping was a lot more adding another 2 RS180...

All very good reasons. Additionally, I believe that on Curt's site he says somewhere that these are likely the "best sounding statements." If total output was not necessity, I think you may have picked a winner. I never would have thought to build these as towers, but now that I see yours, I'm wondering why I didn't.

Very nice work on the cabinets. Great detail. Congratulations. Veneer looks good.
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

My thoughts too. I love listening to my monitors and couldn't use more bass even if it were there. Towers with dedicated x-over space is brilliant.

I can't wait to see what you build next!

Thanks for the comments. I need to finish these before thinking in another build. But very likely it will be something to be used as surrounds. Perhaps Tritrix or Aviatrix or F4...

Looking good, Im just wondering why you opted for the plywood instead of MDF? It would have been a lot more stable invironment for the veneer? R.K.

I did not want to deal with MDF dust. I don't have dust collection or a good respirator, so I preferred ply.

What method did you use for routing out the square tweeter?

I have the tweeter and have yet to flush mount it.

The "corners" are ~1/2", so I just placed stop guides (scrap ply and clamps) and routed with a 1/2" straight bit.
