    Re: Another Tritrix/first build thread

Stain and the first coat of poly on the surrounds....it's too cold out for them to dry properly in the garage and my wife was doing laundry in the mud room (nerve) - so they have to dry in the living room.
Tomorrow I'll tackle the subwoofer box - I'm not purposely putting off making the crossovers - but the weekends of woodworking outside in the nice weather are definately counting down.
One of the disadvantages of living in Canada, I guess....that and expensive shipping from Parts Express:D

      Obligatory update pics...
last coat of poly on the center and rears - first coat on the sub, drying in the laundry room.
....starting to get a little grief from my wife on 4 weeks of tracking in sawdust from the garage - but I'm nearly done the messy part.

Well think what a hero you're going to be when you get these going....

Those look great. Could you maybe have your stuff shipped to someone you know across the river in N.Y.?

....I've been trying to think of someone I could use to do that - the company I worked for from 1998-2009 had an U.S. mailing address in Niagara Falls, NY - it was very handy for stuff like this.
I have friends in Youngstown, Ohio - still about 4-5 hrs from where I live - so not real convenient.

By the time I've got all the components I need from parts express for this 5.1 build - I will have spent approx. $200 in shipping (spread over 3 shipments)...just something you learn to expect living in Canada, but it is a little frustrating considering that if I were 20mi. further east it would be free.

Eh don't worry, it's about the same in AK, I've normally doubled the cost of my order with shipping unless it was something tiny and I could use smart post. I can't wait to get back to "The Real World" aka Lower 48 haha.

Subwoofer complete today, it's actually playing in this picture....if you look closely on the floor you can see the ABS chips that fell into the vent when I was rounding it over...they shot out when I cranked up the Rage Against the Machine.
Also made up some stands to boost up the mains a few inches and add some stability

Nice build -- how do they sound to you? More importantly, how does the wife like the setup?

Let me clarify that only the sub is running right now - I still have to finish the crossovers before any of the speakers will be ready, which will likely be next weekend...just too many other commitments this time of year.

The sub is a RSS265HF-4 with a 240w plate amp. in an vented enclosure just under 2 ft^3...it's in my rec room which is close to 15x16' with a ceiling that slopes from 9ft up to 13ft and 2 skylight shafts...so it's a pretty big volume room

Let me just say that his sub is capable of providing more bass than I'll ever need, and it sounds tight and crystal clear (to me at least). A vast improvement over what I was using before.
Once the other speakers are done I'll spend some time getting things balanced.
....so I really haven't tried to solicit an kind of opinion form my wife just yet

                    Re: Another Tritrix/first build thread

Finally cross overs complete....I apologize for the picture quality, but my time was limited this weekend once again and I really wanted to get things connected for a quick listen....
I'd like to say that I did a nice neat soldering job - but honestly nothing could be farther form the truth. In the last 6 months I've gotten out of the electronics industry and back to machining/fabricating - so in the process I've lost access to the high quality soldering tools and consumables

so using my Home Depot soldering iron and POS lead-free solder - this is the best I could muster...If I've offended anyone here by criticizing their soldering, I'm prepared to be flamed:D

I've spent only about 20 minutes listening to the speakers...and they are exactly what I hoped they would be - I still have a few things bodged together temorarily, that have to be made more permanent, and then I'll spend some more time with them.....

Here's the setup as it stands right now...the fact that the speakers match the fireplace is a big hit with my wife...hopefully she'll grow to appreciate the sound quality as well.
Unfortunately the rest of the project will have to wait until after Christmas now.

I've used the UPS Store for years. They charge $5/package.

I'll probably have to go that route...my neighbour told me he has an U.S. PO box with a 3rd party co. too - I think it costs him $10 per package

the company I was with from 1998-2010 had a shipping address with a US carrier in Buffalo - right by the airport - the carrier would bring the packages through customs right to our door 2-3 times per week...as Plant Manager it wasn't a problem to get a few personal items mixed in there once in a while, but I lost access to that when I was "downsized".

Is that the one in Ogdensburg? Do you have to set up an account with them, or just phone them to let them know a package is coming for you? Do they call when it arrives?

                              Yes.
                              No, no.
                              They might, eventually.

Accepting packages for Canadians is nothing new for them....at this time of year, there are hundreds if not thousands of packages kicking around this one tiny UPS store. And they have their OWN received package online database....how cool is that?

FYI: Print off a UPS delivery notification (or UPS store database info) that you have a package waiting for you in the US....makes the downward crossing easier if they question you. For the upward trip, ensure you print off a packing slip showing costs. PE was always very good about having that, but one vendor drop shipped goods without a packing slip, and I didn't bring one, on a smoking deal I got on a ultrasonic cleaner. The CBS were not very accomodating....it took a while at the border to sort things out. Lesson learned.

Thanks. In the past I've had stuff shipped to a relative in the States and then had her mail it up. Trouble is, it takes a while (she's slow sometimes) and it can still be costly. I'll give this a try next time.
