Yeah, we have to pay 13% sales tax on anything we buy in Ontario - so that is the duty they collect in the boarder.

I have a friend that works close to the boarder and goes over once a week for a tank of gas, a case of beer and a couple of groceries - from what I've heard most boarder guards just let him pass - but I don't really know the details first hand...he might not be declaring it.

You may have saved closer to $40, if not more with any brokerage fee$.

    cheers.
The $63 included duty and brokerage fees - it would have arrived on my doorstep with $0 owing....I've gone that route with parts express twice before - of course those two shipments had the correct contents as well...

I used the UPS store in Lewiston NY - since I order a Tritrix kit plus parts for MT crossovers (I bought the extra tweeter from someone else) - it came in 2 boxes, the UPS store charged $5 to receive the small box, and $10 to receive the large box. I declared the shipment when I crossed the boarder and payed 13% duty which was almost $24, plus the gas I used which was probably close to $10.
So that comes to $49, I was quoted $63 to have it shipped directly to my Canadian address, so i saved myself $14, but blew a good chunk of a Saturday afternoon.

I declared the shipment when I crossed the boarder and payed 13% duty which was almost $24, plus the gas I used which was probably close to $10, and another $3.25 in tolls...
So that comes to $52.25, I was quoted $63 to have it shipped directly to my Canadian address, so i saved myself $10, but blew a good chunk of a Saturday afternoon.

Upon inspecting my shipment at home I discovered that they had shipped me the non-shielded versions of the tweeters and the wrong resistors.
The non-shielded tweeters are not a big deal - except that I get the impression that it was done intentionally, and without my prior consent. Parts Express has agreed to refund the price difference between the tweeters to me, which I am OK with, but I'm out of luck for the resistors since they want to ship replacements to the UPS store, and it's not worth my while to drive back there for $2 worth of resistors. I'll have to buy them locally.

Overall, I don't think that I am warning against this shipping method - but it did not end up being as attractive an option as it originally looked.

What volume/port size did you use?
What did you construct the box out of - it doesn't look like mdf

sorry for all the questions - but it looks almost exactly like what I want to build

    thanks
I used WinISD to help with the box design - it seemed simple enough for a noob like me to plug in numbers - I ended up building a box just under 2 ft^3 - which was a little less than WinISD suggested - but it was a better fit for the materials I had available, it's a 3" port tuned to 24hz - I don't recall the exact length off the top of my head, but it was whatever WinSD spit out

The box is constructed out of 3/4"particle board, with an additional layer of 5/8"particle board veneered both sides on the outside and 4 x 1.5" hardwood dowel braces on the inside. I inserted solid oak strips on the corners for cosmetics

This might seem like a convoluted way to construct a box - but I was motivated my adhering to my assigned budget for the build...a local building supply retailer had 16" x 8' oak veneer particle board clearance priced, so I bought a pile of them for this project and taylored all my box dimensions to work with those sizes.

I'm not a huge fan of working with particle board - but with veneer on both sizes, it's surprisingly rigid, and the second layer really makes it feel solid. I'm not sure I would recommend this method to anyone else...there's a lot of gluing, clamping and flush cutting, compared to making a single layer mdf box with a double baffle, but I am happy with the end result:D

Just wanted to compliment you on your build. They look nice, and they match the rest of the room. Glad you Canadian builders have found a work around...

Thanks for suggesting the UPS store - it turns out there's one in Niagara Falls NY - that I can get to in less than 30min. depending on boarder traffic
I will try that for my next shipment from PE - I still need all the parts for my center and rear channels...it's got to be better that the $65 it would cost to get it shipped to my home.

    They might, eventually.

Accepting packages for Canadians is nothing new for them....at this time of year, there are hundreds if not thousands of packages kicking around this one tiny UPS store. And they have their OWN received package online database....how cool is that?

FYI: Print off a UPS delivery notification (or UPS store database info) that you have a package waiting for you in the US....makes the downward crossing easier if they question you. For the upward trip, ensure you print off a packing slip showing costs. PE was always very good about having that, but one vendor drop shipped goods without a packing slip, and I didn't bring one, on a smoking deal I got on a ultrasonic cleaner. The CBS were not very accomodating....it took a while at the border to sort things out. Lesson learned.
Thanks. In the past I've had stuff shipped to a relative in the States and then had her mail it up. Trouble is, it takes a while (she's slow sometimes) and it can still be costly. I'll give this a try next time.

I'll probably have to go that route...my neighbour told me he has an U.S. PO box with a 3rd party co. too - I think it costs him $10 per package

the company I was with from 1998-2010 had a shipping address with a US carrier in Buffalo - right by the airport - the carrier would bring the packages through customs right to our door 2-3 times per week...as Plant Manager it wasn't a problem to get a few personal items mixed in there once in a while, but I lost access to that when I was "downsized".
