    Don,

I bought the parts to do a pair of Maurbacs, just got them this afternoon, you mentioned this in your earlier reply:

Would you be willing to post the drawings for the tower or give me some guidance on a good starting point? I suppose you could take the basic Maurbac cabinet and then just extend it down from the bottom to get the desired height and then add a shelf to play with different sizes and tunings, seems a shame to waste the volume though, the TL approach is still intriguing though but may be best left to a later build after I get my feet wet again. I looked at WinISD the other day, do you have a preference for a free box modeler?

If you go to page 2, post #37 (or click here) I have a simple view of my towers, which you can see a picture of fabricated on page 4, post #76 (here). If you want the full drawings just let me know and I'll send them to you. PM will work just fine. This isn't the tower he's referring to, but it sounds nice to me~

        Here you go -

Let me know if you need any clarification.

Oh, yah, I almost always use Unibox, but WinISD is just as good, and does some things better. Good to know both.

          Don,

Thanks very much for your feedback and posting the drawings, all I need to do now is digest things a bit and buy some wood and I'm on my way. I'll be sure to post my results as I go. As far as using the same values you used for your original Maurbac version, I don't remember from your thread if the circuit included baffle step correction as part of the design? I will be measuring after I get it together so I will know if there are any irregularities I need to adjust but it may help up front to know.

Thanks for posting your references also, I'll have plenty to consider for this build...............

You're right, I don't think I explicitly talked about BSC.
In any event, BSC is about 3-4 dB as designed in the crossover.

So, using the same components you used but following the centrally mounted tweeter in the tower configuration I can expect the BSC to be off a bit maybe?. I see you did them "using what you have" but I imagine the offset tweeter and woofer asymmetry may help reduce baffle stop artifacts a bit.

It's my understanding (maybe not totally scientific) that the actual BSC (transition from 2Pi space to 4Pi space between about 1000Hz to 100 Hz)
should not really change much for the tower version. The diffraction (edge irregularities) of the upper midrange for the NS6s and the tweeter may change a bit
when they are centered versus the off-center mounts of the original design. I think you said that you had a measuring setup. It would be
great to see how they measure after you've built them. I'm ballparking 1dB or less variation.....

Oh Lord help!!! Don this tower idea has my mind spinning, with a twist... How about a DCR tower? I mean as I understand it in a Dual chamber reflex the primary advantage is less excursion on the drivers to acheive the same tuning, thereby increasing power handling. So if that is the case, then maybe it would solve some of the distortion at slightly higher volumes (that I myself like to listen too). What do you think of that idea? This design is cheap enough that if I can save up a little bit I may have to give it a shot! Oh the agony of more ideas and NO money...

Well, nothing is going to do away with Hoffman's law or Xmax, but as it happens I've been looking again at DCR principles for a new
design I'm working on. It's really pretty easy, just divide the total volume for a ported build into 2/3 and 1/3 chambers, and port
between them. Once again, I'm not sure it will increase power handling, but it will definitely decrease distortion.

Just what I am looking for, a tower version . Already built the Stentorians and love them. I have enough NS6 speakers and currently looking to build either the Maurbac tower or Curt's Sten II's with my son. Any feedback on differences between the two. In my son's case, he will not be using a sub and these will be music only speakers.

Thanks in advance - Uncle Bob

Don just remember, that is a ROT and not an absolute one. I've done a few DCR and ABC boxes and sometimes adjusting those volumes is helpful to reduce xmax at fs.

The Maurbacs (which I listen to daily) have plenty of bass for most music - I'd estimate into the 40s.
They play plenty loud for me, but won't play to "house party" volume.
Curt's Sten IIs, which have an F3 about 70, will play much louder, but will need a sub.

Someday, maybe, I'll figure out how to make money by stockpiling popular buyout drivers.
Or maybe not. It's a hobby, it's supposed to be fun.

Any way someone out there can provide me with a nice "pretty" sketch of the crossover...."Curt C" style . I must confess....I can build them, but it's much easier for this rookie to follow the lines with a nice image than the posted version at the start of this thread. I think I was sick that day in electrical engineering 101. Once I have the basics, I will start a thread when the build commences.
