LECBOS for the Garage

Just finished a pair of Lou's LECBOS. They will be the new garage/shop speakers. Other plans for the OS MTM that are currently serving in the shop.

Built to Lou's plans, including 1/2" Baltic Birch. First time I used actual Duratex for the cabs. Won't be the last time, I can see why folks like this stuff. Got mine from Speaker Hardware. used the spray grade, applied w/ foam roller.

Used a piece of "fluffed" Ultra Touch vertically down the center of the cab.

I can see why Lou likes the Peerless drivers. The speakers do crank. Very efficient. WBCD predicts 108.7dB w/ 30 watts and I see no reason to doubt. Plenty loud w/ DTA-100A at less than 1/2 volume. Tuned to 62Hz gives F3/F10 of 66/50, but as Lou said in his writeup, they seem to play much lower. I tested w/ Adele's 21 album and the drums give that solid thump that you expect. Not much listening time so far, but really pleased.

Nicely done. My pair are still one of my favorite DIY projects. Just wish I would have bought more of the woofers when they were available (don't we all).

Very cool for a cheap speaker those Peerless buyouts could be made into a fairly nice affordable project. I've used ten so far and I've been pleased with all of them.

When I had a half-decent crossover in the Deadhorse speakers, with the 835004s I was completely impressed with the bass drums I heard, just WOW. I can't wait to get my stuff hopefully tomorrow and get started on them again.

Glad to hear you liked them. Pretty good speakers IMHO. The 8 ohm load is also a great bonus. The price is just a deal sweetener. Look surprisingly familiar...
I used some 4 ohm CSX Peerless in a similar design way back in the day. Despite the low XMAX, bass is surprisingly good. from those too.
For newbies to designing, the Peerless paper, nomex, or polys are great place to start.

The original design fit my need for a shop speaker perfectly. Liked the front slot so they could sit back on a shelf. I've had the box parts cut for about 6 months. When I finally decided to put them together, another Duratex thread appeared and prompted me to give that a try for cabinet finish. Very happy I did.
Given the wire shelves, I'm also happy about the 1/2" ply build. Everything works when you use a Master's design. ;)
Definitely makes me want to get on the stick with a build of 50WattHead's Gilas or Gila 28s so I can hear the HDS drivers.

Do you have the 831735's Fast? You will be shocked at the low end extension of them. What Lou said about the LECBOS must hold true for many of the peerless woofers- that they seem to play much lower than you "know" that they are.
I also want to look into plug n play with the normal stock of the HDS 6.5''. I forget the number of them, but I am quite positive they are identical to the 831735's with 2db less sensitivity. I would like to order 4 of them and swap out my 831735's to see if we can keep all these designs alive for the NLA woofer.

Those Lecbos you have there look nice, I dig the slot port. I too need a 1 and done set for the garage, and the front slot port is the way to go since mine too will be on a shelf.

If you are looking at swapping the 830875 for the 831375, they are different beasts. The 175 definitely digs deeper and has a bit of "hill" in the 500-1000 range. Great driver, very flexible. Used it in my PeeDei

The 075 I used in the VeePers wants a smaller box, and doesn't have the same low end grunt. Both are very capable drivers, but in IMO they aren't interchangeable.

I have 4 831735s waiting to be used. I'm inclined to build the Gila 28 MTM since I also am building Jeff's RS180 MTM. Might be an interesting side-by-side. ;)

Like everyone's said, the peerless woofers offer more low end than expected. My Nichikuros with the 831735s hit mid 30s and with the room gain can sometimes be too much. I really want to try the GFC peerless because the look SOOOO nice, but they're quite a bit more than my $40 driver price limit that I'm comfortable with. Combine the great low end with some of the best midrange I've heard and I think the peerless are hard to beat.

Nice build. I am still amazed at mine and the sound quality from $30 worth of drivers. Amazing when Lou puts on his mad scientist hat!
Now if i would finish them off, instead of being in raw MDF they would look good and sound fantastic.
Even set 'em up as Left/Right/Center in the living room and had nothing that I could here bad with the center laid on its side.
Wish I had bought more of these drivers when they were still around.

Thanks. They do put some sound into the garage. For those that wonder what happened to the OS MTMs that were my beloved garage speakers, they have a new home with a young friend and his family. They're his new HT mains and he couldn't be happier. Good all around.
