Dayton Twin Towers

First time on tech talk, spent most of my time before on the Elemental Design's form until it was shutdown. I am also apart of the ICIXSound forum and you can also fined the build here.

Starting a project to build a set of tower speakers for my dad's Christmas present. The plan is to use the Dayton Audio Classic series with two 8 inch drivers, a mid, and tweeter. The box with be 14" X 10" X 48" with a volume of 2.3 cuft and a front facing 4" port tuning the box to 40 Hz.

Here is a concept drawing that show an exploded view of the components for the front baffle. The plan is to wrap the small baffle inserts with grill cloth to cover the speakers and port. Then have the top baffle sandwich the grill baffles to the speaker/port baffle. The front will be a high gloss black finish and the rest of the box will be a satin black.





As it stands right now I have the wood cut and just recieved the speakers today so I hope to have some pictures up tomorrow or by the end of the weekend.

Don't know any good reason to tune them that high, personally I'd shoot for more like low 30's for Fb.

If you've never modeled this, go to www.linearteam.org and get WinISD .

Search on the net for "Dayton 8" (originally built by Dave Tenney using a crossover developed by Wayne Jaeske - sp?)

Also, I would NEVER use the Classic mid-dome over the Reference mid-dome, even if it were less expensive, which it isn't ! ?

The box will most likely end up closer to 35 Hz give or take, I adjusted the length of the box by 1 inch to use the factory 49" sheet, also by the time I add the polyfill and sound dampener, it should be lower.

Never really enjoyed working with WinISD, I have had better luck just examining the spec sheets but I have used it in the past.

The classic mid is my bad, at the time I was working on several different dream projects that I wanted to do and ended up ordering that one. I will have to see how it does with the setup and if need be, exchange it for the reference series.

Started putting the box together, ran into a problem with the baffles not sliding in to the slots, so have to break and go get a chisel. Here are some progress photos:

WinISD is one of the most friendly box design programs out there, but if you haven't seen it, there's Unibox, which many prefer for being more comprehensive:

Really the best way to get an accurate representation of performance and tuning. It's all in the XO design, though. And if that's not worked up properly, it won't matter what mid driver you use; it'll end up sounding like, in Wolf's words: BLECH. Nice cabinet work, can't wait to see how it comes together. I've built some DIY projects that use the mid dome and with the correct XO design, it can sound very good.

Finally got a chance to finish building the boxes, need to do some serious sanding and get the baffles ready to cut for the speakers.

Made some progress on the speakers, would have had them done besides paint but one of the mid range drivers cone was crushed in.





Did some quick listening and so far sounds good with one speakers but I am excited to see how they sound with two speakers. Plan to clean the boxes up and have them completely finished by next week.

Not to criticize ('cause you probably just don't know - 'cause you haven't read "Speakerbuilding 201" - which you should), but you might want to redesign your baffles. It's BEST to keep you drivers close together. The woofers (as a pair) CAN be farther away (this is all mathmatically based on the crossover freq. - which you don't know yet because you have no crossover design, and the SOS - which is about 13,500 ips - which you'd know if you'd read "Speakerbuilding 201"), but if you divide 13500/2000Hz (a typical crosspoint for the tweeter) you get 6.75". THAT would be the maximum distance you should have C-C between the tweeter and the mid. What's YOUR center-to-center distance? It looks a LOT bigger.

Even if the baffles are complete, and can't be removed, it would still behoove you to plug up the mid hole and redrill, getting those 2 drivers as close as possible, unless you're already under 6.75".

Did some scaling off your pics.
Looks like the tweeter/mid distance is about 7-1/2", setting THAT Fc near 1.8kHz, which is about the limit for the -070 "Silky". You could have gotten down to more like 4-1/2" (using the truncated "Silky - which I think was going for $12) which would have let you use a lot more of the mid-dome's range, up to about 3kHz.

Larger problem is that the dome mid shouldn't go below 500Hz (that dome should "ideally" cover 3 octaves - which you'd know if . . . , 500 to 4000 Hz would be sweet, but you'd need a smaller faceplate tweeter).

Your distance down from the center of the mid-dome to you lower woofer looks to be almost 19". 13,500ips / 19in = 700 cps.
So your mid needs to run from 500 to 1800 Hz.

Also, most boxes (today) are deeper than wide. Personally, I'd have turned your box "sideways" so it was 10"w x 14"d. That way you'd have 4 more inches available for port length. Dual 8's really beg for a 4"dia. port (like Dave Tennie's "Dayton 8's"). Looks like even a 7" long vent could barely fit in there w/out an elbow. Also, I figure your volume at under 2.4 cf, which is pretty small for vented dual 8s. You'd have ended up with 2.9 cf if you hadn't triple-baffled.
