Re: Dayton Twin Towers
You're probably talking about diffraction. Most of the baffle-step probably falls in the woofers' range and won't change much.
The bottom will end near 50Hz, instead of 30 for the ported box (they WILL be smaller though).

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
Ok, played a little bit more with some Clio files I downloaded and this is what I came up with for a 1 cuft box, with baffle step, and everything compensated. Again, this is just simulated so I am not a 100% if this would be the same frequency response.
Also an updated box:
If this goes any further then I will start a new build tread in the TT area.

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
Been chatting with my dad about redoing his speakers. They are not bad but could use a lot of improvement from where I was 9 months ago. Thinking about doing sealed box and making them a little smaller form factor. I have been toying with the idea of a narrow face for the mid and tweeter to reduce baffle step and give them an open space.
Here are two concept drawings based on a 1.5 sqft box, I am open to suggestions on both and the only difference is the wings on the top part.
First my favorite of the two:

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
Finished the speakers, thanks to the cold snap we got here in Iowa, the finish is not 100% to what I wanted. Come this summer I will be sanding them down and re-doing the finish. But overall I am very happy with how everything turned out, love the front grills and how everything is blacked out. Now the photos.....
Now it is time to enjoy them before I take them to my Dad's. :D :D :D

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
The Lyra was designed as sealed, but a little figuring with WinISD or Unibox would give you a vented volume suggestion and port dimensions. IIRC, the cabinet volume was about 1.8 ft3, give or take a tenth or so. I've used the Lyra in many OEM cabinets from 1.5 ft3 up to 2.2 ft3 with great results. I haven't dome a ported one though. Here's the Lyra XO:

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
okay , thanks for the info . I won't be using Toms C-C spacing but having the drivers close as possible

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
The dual 8's (in parallel) are approx. 6dB more sensitive than a single running at 8Ω.
So . . . the mid and tweeter would need 6dB more attenuation, ALSO, the mid-tweet Fc could (should) be higher (dependent on their C-C spacing). THIS design did NOT optimize that cross point, it was based on the OP's rather large spacing, since he already had the cabs built.
So, you'd have to mod the LP, and the BP AND HP. That's the whole enchilada!

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
Thanks for the tip on Wayne's 10 inch Classic 3 way Lyra project Wolf...... but I already built the Dayton 8 project which uses the classic 8 like Thumper Tom's twin towers.
I found all the information on line about the Lyra's but could not find the enclosure and crossover data for them .
I wondered if I could adjust Chris R's crossover for Tom by changing the coil and cap for one woofer instead of two 8's. I like the Dayton 8's but would really like to listen to them as a 3 way and also move them out of the sealed .90 cu. ft. enclosure to a larger vented cabinet

Other thing I noticed is that you've really got a lot of "stuff" out in front of these, not the tweeters really, but the woofers & mids, esp. the mid on the left. Those boxes out in front probably aren't helping anything (like "imaging"). I'd even recess the PC to get it behind the baffle, if you can.
And you DO have them lined, don't you?
The boxes are lined with pollyfil and some recycled cotton insulation, and the sub boxes to the left do have a good effect on the sound but I mainly wanted to make sure the crossovers were working correctly.

Wayne Jaeschke's 'Lyra' is what you're after.

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
Could this crossover be changed to work with only one Dayton Classic 8 woofer instead of 2 per cabinet ?
I'd really like to add the Classic Dayton Mid to my Dayton Eight

Re: Dayton Twin Towers
Thanks for the crossover Chris, and here is a little update:
Layout of the crossover:
Underside:
Sound Testing:
SQ wise needs a little work but I think with a little bit more play time the speakers with sound a lot better.
As for movie watching they work really well, watched Inception last night in stereo, and I think my dad will be very impressed.
All I need to do is disassemble, sand, seal, and paint. Hope to have it all done by Friday. :D
