  • My old speakers, looking to build something new .

    Hi,

Decided to join so I could ask some questions in another section, here are my main speakers I've built years ago and have been using ever since.

Drivers are scanspeak ss9500, vifa pl18, and scanspeak 8565. Cabinets are made out of 1" thick hdf, braced internally and front panel is 2" in thickness.

My amp is dual mono diy p3a, and passive pre-amp.

    welcome JeanM
Something seems to have gone awry with your attachments.
Try getting the thumbnail in there again. (think this happened to me once, when i was trying to get fancy with it)

They look beefy, maybe even TOO beefy. I know there are different schools of thought about if there is such a thing as an over-built cabinet, but with a 2inch baffle I would be worried about the drivers being able to breath without heavy duty chamfering, and with it I would be worried that the extra material wasn't helping as much as it should.

Anyway, all that matters is what they sound like. What sort of speakers are you thinking about building this time?

JeanM, not to be rude, but I don't see a question in your post.

I assume you are thinking of getting new speakers. What are the issues with your current speakers that you hope to address, or is just time for something new?
Any constraints on the next set (cost, size, etc.)?

                Andy.

Cabinets were made to have the least amount of vibration, you can never have them made too beefy The area behind the mid drivers were rounded off, no problems there.

No issues, I am just eager to build something new...maybe a TL? I've done the usual sealed, ported, single full range driver.... would like to try a TL or something bigger like WMTMW, not sure about line array though....

Current speakers play pretty much anything fine, from classical/voice to jazz to even techno/bass music. If anything I would like to improve the detail of midrange AND also maximum SPL level while decreasing distortion.

I like to be able to play music LOUD and clean. Think, BIG studio monitors ? I know TL isn't the answer, but I want to build a good proven TL design just to compare.

With your interest in a TL, look up some bulds by ManardG. He has done several.
