  • economy class music sub...

I have built 2 satellite speakers with 3" TB as illustrated here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-...81si-nice.html

I want to build a sub to mate with these, it will be used as a PC speaker type setup only for music, and not as HT. Can someone suggest a driver-plateamp combo with "economy" in mind, and would also need dimensions?

I'm in a similar boat as you. I'm looking at doing a single Bitty Boom by NateDiggity and Wolf. It's a single 6.5" Dayton classic woofer with a 8" DVC PR in .4cf. Should be about 100 bucks with driver, PR and amp. They used a 8" x 14" tube. I'm going to try it in a box (I already have a 11x11x11 box with a cutout for the 8" DVC and the 70 watt plate amp. I can modify it to fit the 6.5", 8" DVC and 25 watt plate. Should be OK.

About 5 yrs ago, I built my $50 "Little White Sub". I think you can still build it today for under $60.

8" DVC (SD215A-88) with the SA25 amp. In my vented box (saves the cost of passive radiators) it'll reach Xmax at 46w. Many use the 8" with the SA70w amp, but the 25w amp will easily push it to satisfying levels for desktop use. I use mine while treadmilling in the basement, along with a pair of BR-1 clones. The port is 3"d x 13" long, you if you can find a 3" mailing tube, you can save the cost of a port tube as well.

          OD's using 3/4" stuff: 14" x 14" x 18". Net volume ends up at 1.43 cf, tuned to 30Hz, with an F3 of 29Hz. Quite deep.

I actually copied this recipe for my home sub and I can attest that it does a great job for the cost. I use it as my main sub in the living room. Mine uses the 70 watt amp. I love it but it is too large to put under my desk.

A single sealed Infinity 1260W or 1060W is going to be very cheap and will perform much better than a "tiny" sub.

Please excuse me for reviving and hijacking a thread, But this sounds like exactly what I've been looking for as well.

Noob question: Would I wire the two VCs in series or parallel?

                  Thanks in advance!

I had the 25 watt plate amp. It does sound good, and it can be used for a desktop speaker, but the 70 watt plate amp is just a few more dollars, and I'd recommend it.

If you try and push the little 25 watt plate amp at all, it will clip. More headroom for just a few more buxs would totally be worth it.

FYI, I have the 10" version sealed under my computer desk. IMO, probably worth the upgrade. It doesn't sharply roll off till mid 30hz (in my room via rat shack meter). The 8" will surly work, but I'd do it ported or use a passive radiator with it. (PR offsets the cost of just using the 10") Not sure what type of box you were planning.

                          Re: economy class music sub...

I tried the previous iteration of the 8" in several different alignments, and never managed to get it to sound "right". YMMV.

25 watts really isn't enough unless you use it for low level listening as Chris does when he is using the treadmill. As generic pointed out, the extra headroom of the 70 is well worth it.

That all being said, there is a severe lack of entry level DIY subwoofer options out there. The Dayton DVC 8" with 25 or 70 watt amp is really not going to perform much better than quite a few of the entry level commercial subwoofers available these days, many of which can be found on sale for less than $100 - plug and play. When you start absolute budget class speakers, DIY is not your best bet. At this price level, you do it because you love it.

Shop around, you may be surprised at what you can find.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

                            Re: economy class music sub...

I agree that it is hard to DIY a sub on a crazy budget, but it seems like many budget ported subs are port tuned for a pretty big bump to make them sound bigger then they really are. Granted, I haven't heard them all. This would be the easy solution. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-628 If it sounds boomy or your not happy with the port sound. Stuff it. I did this years ago with an Infinity sub. It might have killed bass extension, but it improved SQ greatly.

The price of the Dayton DVC line seems to have come back down in price back to what it used to be. I actually got two shielded 10" versions at half off, so it was really cheap to build a computer and car sub. They do seem to sound better then many big box store subs. I think the 10" version had climbed up to around $45, but it's back just a tad under $40 now. Really not that bad at all for the SQ it has. It's limitation is Xmas and power handling. I can't compare it to the pre-built one listed above.

Another affordable DIY option could be this guy. http://www.mcmelectronics.com/produc...-2421-/55-2421
