    Re: economy class music sub...

Unless you really DON'T like building stuff, the 8" DVC can still be built for less, and it goes lower, at least down to 30Hz. You could even build it out of scraps lying around, and using a 3" cardboard mailing tube for a port.

I'm surprised how rarely I see mention of these: 8" Classic Series Sub

It's got a shade more Xmax than the 8" DVC sub, a shade more sensitivity, it likes a small box, and it has a copper cap on the pole piece for lowered inductance. It's also very solidly built. Not that the 8" DVC isn't a great choice, but this is just another option.

Several reasons why I don't prefer the newer sub, are: it won't reach as low (due to the lowish Qts), it costs almost twice as much, it makes vented box building a PITA 'cause it's hard enough to vent the DVC down to 30Hz in 1.2-1.5 cf - next to impossible for the Classic in a box half that size (due to the lowish Q, and the fact that an 8" sub really needs a 3"id vent) unless you add to the complexity by building a slot vent - or to the price by adding a PR.

Those things knock it out of the easy to build/budget category for me. I do wish the DVC had better Xmax and Pe ratings though. IMM, the lower Le isn't THAT big of a factor for a sub. The only easy way to take advantage of its small box craving is to go sealed, and then I wouldn't call it a "sub", unless you boost it.

Many of the HO subs end up also wanting too small of a vented box to be practical. PE doesn't really have any 10" or 12" subs that can get down into the HT range (low 30s) in a "practical" small-size box (2cf is optimum imo). One of the best ones right now seems to the the Infinity 1260w. It's got a really nice set of T/S parms. that facilitate vented box building.
