    Re: Ultimax 10" Subwoofers Finished

Matt, I was getting some flat packs cut next week for the 10" Ultimax in a 1.25 cuft enclosure. I was going to draw an outline on the back panel that could be cut out for one of the PE subwoofer amplifiers. Which amp would you recommend for those subwoofers?

These are sealed with a slightly lower Q than "optimal", reviewing my original model the actual Vb is ~1.043 cubic feet for a Q of .632. They are being powered with a Behringer EP4000 providing about 950 watts to each. Overall dimensions are 17-1/2"H x 19"D x 12-1/2"W. These have more than your average bracing and a chamber filled with sand, so the overall dimensions do not reflect internal volume very well and can probably be built to a smaller footprint.

The 2.5"d vent you got talked into has under 5 sq. in of area, only about 60% of the area I thought it needed. This has nothing to do with your problem though.
I'm assuming this was in reply to DarrenM...

        Erich,

I would recommend the Dayton 500 or 1000 watt models, either will be enough for this woofer with the option of headroom with the 1000 watt and they both fit the same opening.

          Re: Ultimax 10" Subwoofers Finished

When we designed the Ultimax subwoofers, we were aiming for excellent performance in a sealed box. Performance in a vented box took a back seat to making sure the sealed alignment performance was competitive with anything out there. This isn't to say that you "can't" do a good vented enclosure alignment with them, but they really shine in sealed boxes, whether for home theater or car audio. (IB use isn't recommended without close attention to excursion -- we offer a purpose-built driver for that.)

Using them sealed also gets rid of the question of how to properly port them for maximum air movement. A pair of the PR-15 passive radiators from AE Speakers are just barely enough to cope with a single 12" Ultimax driver. The Ultimax have Klippel-verified 23mm Xmax (19mm is the coil-length-derived figure), but they have even more mechanical excursion, to help them stand up to abuse, and it's at those levels that even the pair of 15" high-excursion PRs won't be able to keep up with the Ultimax 12" model.

We recommend the SPA500 plate amplifier for the 10" model, and the SPA1000 plate or SA1000 rack amp for the 12" models. Be careful to wire the coils in series to achieve the correct impedance: (Amp +)======(Coil1 +) (Coil1 -)======(Coil2 +) (Coil2 -)======(Amp -)

          Happy bass-ing.
          Best Regards,

              Re: Ultimax 10" Subwoofers Finished

Thanks for the information. I'm debating on which subwoofer box to put these in now.

The 2 smaller subwoofer boxes will be a 14.25" cube and a 15.5" cube.

The 14.25" is about 1.2 cuft, which nets close to 1 cuft after bracing and woofer displacement.

The 15.5" is about 1.5 cuft, which nets close to 1.25cuft after bracing and woofer displacement.

I'd still have to subtract off the amp to get to the net volume.

So which box would you use for the Ultimax 10"? I'm leaning more towards the 15.5" cube because both of those amps have a fairly big housing.

Then making the box for the 12" Ultimax around 2.25 cuft.

After modeling both extensively I would agree with the slightly larger volume for the 10" due to the plate amp enclosures. The volume you have figured for the 12" should be ideal. I personally like a lower Qtc to aid the low end response a bit. As Rory said, the excursion is great enough on these to EQ to your hearts content. I can't wait to get some measurements posted.

Hey Erich are you gonna have flat packs cut for the 15" version also ?

Yes I lined the walls with 2" thick R6 non backed insulation. I got mine at my local Menards in 16" wide, 40" long rolls for $2 each.
