  • Wolf's PC and Shawn's Triska 2.1 project

I just completed this project a few days ago (sorry for not posting a build thread). This project is for my mom for her office computer. I have been obtaining all of the components needed for this build for a few years now it seems, and just decided to build everything. The PC speakers are a bit modified from Ben's original dimensions, purely for aesthetic reasons. They maintain very closely to his spec'd volume, and have a removable baffle that is made from solid pine. I remember seeing a few builds of people mounting the dayton ND series on the back of the baffle to hide the frame, so I stole that idea and did it with the ns3's. The opening has a round over on it, and all edges were chamfered. I contemplated doing round overs, but I had a picture in my head of how I wanted the subwoofer to look so I stuck with the 45's. The paint is just a basic gloss latex with a clear coat. It's much easier to build then it is to finish for sure!! They are being powered by a Lepai 2020A.

The triska subwoofer was built to the dimensions that Shawn had spec'd. I did add a vertical brace to connect the top and bottom panels, but that was it for bracing. I did use the sa70 for power, and it is more then enough. I picked up the SD215 when PE closed out the shielded versions for a good price. It, the PR's, and the sa70 are surface mounted. I had also bought three grills to protect the goods but they ended up not fitting so I will have to think of something else. Personally, I am not a fan of speaker grills but the subwoofer will reside in a place that my niece is active in and do not want them to get damaged. It has the same white paint, with chamfers running vertical on the four corners. I cut a bottom and top piece made out of pine that extends all edges by about 1", and each corner is 45 cut to match the box. I think it turned out pretty good, and they are just attached using brad nails. All the pine wood was finished with danish oil.

I chose to use pine to match the rest of the new woodwork that my brother and I have done in my parent's new upstairs addition. It will look pretty good once we are all done, and her speakers will match, (she's excited about it). Here is just a sample picture of what we have done to show:

So how do they sound? The PC's sound really good for near field listening, especially for what they are. Sure they have some limitations for bass extension and treble extension, but those aside, they sound good to me. Vocals are real clear, which will be a plus for my mom. There just isn't really anything I can fault them for, and I will be picking up a few more pairs of ns3's. The triska subwoofer really out did my expectations. The bass is really solid, with good extension for music. It doesn't sound muddy to me and gets louder then I thought it would. Will it blow your hair back, no, but it fills a room nicely and is better then every small subwoofer I have ever heard. It will be overkill for my mom's application no doubt, but that's alright.

I just want to thank both Ben and Shawn for posting these great designs. They are both really easy to build, and pretty cheap. The performance of this combo is really good and I doubt you could come close to it in price buying a retail set of 2.1 computer speakers. Hope you all enjoy the pictures, I had a blast building them and am jealous that they are going to my mom and not on my computer desk!!!!!

Very nice looking set. I like your combination of white with solid pine.

                very nice.
the two piece grills will fit the triska drivers.

Did you have to big time force the grills to fit? I have the same grills and there is no way to make them fit without drilling holes in the basket. My grills also only have 4 pre-drilled holes instead of 8. Lining up a hole on the grill to a hole on the speaker, the bottom off the grill rides on the speaker surround. It looks like you had to angle the screws, but even then I will need to drill new holes.

i put the speaker on top of the frame and drilled them through. the screws are angled because i made the through hole to large.
i had a need to make them match the recession busters i made for my son.

Nice work Tony. I like how you matched the speakers to the room finish. I'm sure your mom will be happy with the looks and sound.
