  • Lola Redux - boombox

    Hi guys..

my second speaker build after a pair of Tritrix's.

This one with a little more of my own flavor in it. 1/2 inch mdf, Its powered by a Lepai amp, has a bluetoooth wireless connection and a pair of old school Vu meters for eye candy.

Its based around Paul Carmody's Sprite except that the center partition is open in order to achieve the aesthetics i wanted. Probably could have done it better but it was a "feel as i went along" project and this is how t ended up. This is the second version after i didn't like how the original version looked.

btw, does it matter that its not a sealed partition?

Waiting for the paint to cure before screwing on feet and a carry handle.

It was a fun build and my first time working mdf. The lack of proper tools made it more difficult than it should have, used lots and lots of sandpaper to correct for poor edges. Wood filler become my best friend.

It sounds pretty good for what its worth. It could do with an active volume contoured EQ to make it perform like some of the commercial products out there. Nothing that cant be achieved with a little good old fashioned knob twiddling for maximum effect at any given volume.

And thank you Paul for giving me a very workable head start to work with. Much appreciate the effort you put into your designs and sharing them with us.

    Regards,
    asmd.

WOW! That is so cool! So where'd you get the VU meters? And how did you wire them?
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

I sourced the Vu meters and the driver boards off Ebay. Theres so very many shapes and sizes. They vary by quality, but these by Nissei are apparently well thought of and they've been rewired with led backlighting instead of incandescent bulbs for prolonged life.

The meters are wired to the pre-amplifier line level source from the bluetooth unit. So, the volume control of the Lepai amplifier has no effect on the meter. The line level source has to be kept at maximum volume.. in my case ane phone/media player connected to it via bluetooth. I used a belkin bluetooth unit as it has handsfree pairing. One less button to contend with.

@ Rotech - This is my second time with paint actually. The first time was on the previous version, came out just like this one. Did a lot of reading on how to get this effect.
        Basically -

        1- sand flat.
2- use a primer and sand again, redo primer and then wet sand flat and let dry.
3- Rattle can spray 5-8 coats gently building it up and let dry for 7 days.
4- wet sand with 800 grit, followed by 2000 grit.
4- Use automotive rubbing compound to get a mirror finish followed by an automotive polish.

It is a laborious process, thats for sure.

This was my first attempt: -

I wasn't happy with the aesthetics and rebuilt it to its current form.

Well version #2 is spectacular. Really, really nice job.
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

I agree -- that's a very nice job. Your project is a good example of the level of quality that can be achieved without buying all sorts of expensive equipment. You can certainly be proud of it -- I know I would be.

Finally got the back sorted out. Used 3/8" foam thats available at home depot as a seal for the back.
Turns out free hand pyrography is harder than it looks. My first attempt...
All it needs is the handle which should arrive tomorrow.

                Nice build, especially v2.

I have question regarding the amp - it looks like the Lepai LP-2020 amp. how did you install in the wooden board? Looks pretty slick.

                  Re: Lola Redux - boombox

It is the Lepai 2020. I used an oak blank wall switch that i got from Walmart.
i disassembled the Lepai and lined it up with the balnk and used a drill to make the holes for the bass, treble, defeat and bluetooth indicator. For the volume control cutout, i used a dremel with the circle cutting tool.

just waiting for a couple more days for the paint to cure before i screw on the handle.

Finally finished it.. screwed on the handle and gave it a once over with polishing compound.
                      Took some eye candy pics.

Like any good idea, some bad ideas and a few truly great ideas, this one came about over a couple of bottles of beer. True story. Anyhow,  this one also stems from my hunt for a decent table top ra…

Great job. That's what I would call, Super, Neat, Groovy and Cool.
I'm going to take a lesson from this on painting techniques. I just need to grow some patience.

how did you obtain such a clean looking front baffle? Did you just use wood filler over the driver mounting holes?

Did you forsee any problems from the front baffle being non removable?

Looking to build a similar project.
