what is the most practical, or largest, cabinet to maximize bass for this woofer?

And can the port be on the front of the cabinet to increase bass? Or would it just muddy up the sound?

Larger cabinets don't necessarily mean lower bass. In fact a too large enclosure can negatively impact a drivers performance. Madisound gives you some enclosure recommendations that you should follow - no need to attempt to re-invent the wheel.

As far as port location goes, since the lowest frequencies are non-directional AND if you plan to have at least a foot of space behind the speaker, then go with a rear firing placement.

I'm running these in front speakers and followed Madisound's guidelines. They work perfectly, and yes they are rear ported.

Putting the port on the front will NOT increase bass, in the least. At most, it might increase the odds of you hearing any "chuffing" or midrange "leakage".
