  • DIY Speaker Cables (Bored, and just sharing.)

I haven't had a lot of $$$ or time lately to make much sawdust, but I did make some new 6' speaker cables in my spare hours to keep my brain busy.

I used two 6 foot runs of dual strand 18 Awg in wall speaker cable. The two strands of 18 Awg wire together result in a 13 Awg strand. The individual strands are twisted inside the Carbon Fiber look Techflex shielding, and I also twisted the two runs of dual wires before putting them in sleeving. I stripped back the in wall shielding, twisted each +/- pair together, and split them with some wire pants before terminating them with screw type banana plugs. The sleeving and pants are held secure with some PE adhesive heat shrink, and the ends of the sleeving are held to the bottom of the banana plugs with some non-adhesive heat shrink. One end of the heat shrink is wrapped and shrunk around the base of the plug before screwing the top on.

All of the materials can be found at PE:

    Wire - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=100-710

    Sleeving - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=082-352

    Cable Pants - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=082-784

    Adhesive Heat Shrink - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=080-674

As far as the banana plugs go, you could use whatever type you prefer. If I could go back, I probably would have used a compression type, or crimp on type. Call me paranoid, but after trying these screw type, I don't necessarily like the way the wire terminates inside them. They work though, so I guess mission successful. They turned out looking pretty decent as well.

Funny I made a set that look almost EXACTLY like those. Banana Connectors, Cable Pants, and the "Carbon" sleeve!

They look a lot better than mine came out haha.

Great minds, I guess lol. I like the look of the "carbon" sleeving. It's pretty tough to boot. I'm not sure how well it will protect against straying electrons though... :D

The next pair I make will definitely use a different type of banana plug. I don't care for the screw on top type. Figured I'd give em a shot though. I know they connected because they carry a signal, but I like to know for sure what's going on inside there when I'm tightening them down if that makes sense.

Nice job. I did something similar with interconnects to a Thorens turntable I restored over the winter. I used military spec silver coated coax and rca connectors from PE.

I used the cheap ones that PE offers. THESE

They're good. They work (what more is required of them, idk)

Those came out very nice. I like the look a lot. I never really paid much attention to speaker cables until fairly recently. I mostly used stripped wire twisted and shoved right into the terminal. I did at least tin the end of the wire though! Now I put more effort into it since you always end up seeing some of the cable, might as well make it pretty!

Those are the ones I use; I have several dozen in my supply. Only thing I don't like about 'em is the fact that the colored sleeve that covers where the wire goes in tends to slide off rather easily. I still use them, though. Have you found any fix for that? Reminds me of a pair of old pliers I had that had that same type of handle covering on it... the goofy thing always would slip as I was trying to grip something -- drove me nuts.

Those are the type I thought I was getting, and are the ones I would have preferred. The type with a set screw. The ones I used are from Monoprice, and were some that I had sitting around. The entire plug screws apart, and you have to fold the wire over a little lip inside.

I've been eyeing this for the job: http://www.ebay.com/itm/160685091681...84.m1423.l2649

It's $7 per foot, but a short run wouldn't come out all that expensive.

Thanks. A friend of mine with a long history of repairing electronics and building speakers recommended this wire from this seller. I think I bought two 20 foot lengths from him and he got them to me very quickly. I have the parts and pieces to make several more interconnects when I find the time.

I did these last week, for fun as much as anything. Nakamichi plugs from eBay, and cloth covered 20 awg stranded copper. Three conductors: hot, ground, and another ground connected at only one end. Braided, unshielded.

Did a quick unscientific comparison with generic shielded RCA cable, and couldn't tell any difference in levels of hum or noise at full volume.

I'm not sure what it's called; I hoped it might lend some additional shielding coverage. This was fun to try because I really was unsure how they would turn out, and it was a pleasant surprise to hear they're as quiet as ordinary shielded RCA cable. I haven't had a chance to really listen to them with music yet, but at low (night-time, family is asleep) volumes they sounded as good as generic cable.

Of course, they've still yet to burn in :p :D
