  • Fierce Audio Flat Pack: Build & Review

So picked these up for the paltry price of $12.99ea with free shipping. It took less than an hour start to finish to assemble both. At this price, I defintetly did not have high expectations. They were not perfect, but they aren't horrible either. The kit is all inclusive with carpeted panels, glue, terminal and 16ga wire, and screws for the enclosure and sub. The material is 3/4 nominal and no worse than I have seen at the big box places.

The box advertises these as .88 cubes and an fb of 40Hz. According to my measurements, they are more like .836 and a tune of about 43.5 or so. In a box this size, that is a major shift IMO. Not horribly so, but if someone is relying on accuracy, this isn't it.

I assembled them per the instructions instead of making what many of us would deem necessary changes/additions. Simply because they were designed for the average kid who does not have access to clamps/routers, etc that many of us do. I may add a brace later, but in a box this small, and with the tuning already so far from where it should be, I don't belive it will be an audible difference for its intended location. In this case, the back end of my mazda tribute while I decide on a replacement 12.

Dimensions are: 14.75"W x 14"D x 13"H The port is 1"w x 11.5" and is about 18"L (actual port length, not including end correction. The panels are routed out for the front, rear, and port walls. The screw holes are all pre-drilled and have an interesting feature. At the bottom of the hole is a plastic plug that the screw goes in to. Seems to work fairly well. The panels are all cut on the 45 except for the last which is a b*u*t*t joint.

The build quality was a bit better than expected given the price point. Guys, we can't compete at this price, no way around it. Fit was not bad though I did find the carpet a bit weak at the corners and glue did seep through on one panel. The screws are not really noticable. Oh and there are 16 of them! One screw was IMO badly placed as it tore the material at the woofer cut out. You can't see it from the outside and my woofer mounts did not come into contact at that point. The glue was so-so, a bit runny so shake it well before applying. I like liberal amounts of glue and would have appreciated having a bit more. The instructions were clearly laid out and easy to follow.

Re: Fierce Audio Flat Pack: Build & Review

I do have a few more pics, but photobucket does not seem to want to cooperate. Sorry, I will try again later. I used a pair of kicker c10s in these. Much less than ideal for them, but they fit. I may end up adding a new front and resizing these for an 8" instead.

I only have a few critiques on them overall. The leads are just a little short, but they did come with terminals. The glue is ehh at best. The screw placement around the driver opening was not ideal. Better to have one at the top and one at the bottom than one centered. The carpet was not cut well on one corner and left a small exposed edge. The box is smaller than advertised resulting in a higher tuning freq as well. Additional bracing if nothing else just to give that warm, fuzzy feeling.

What I did like; fast build! All inclusive parts, fit was decent, no clamps necessary. The carpet actually continued all the way down the port, the terminal is decent quality, spring loaded though it won't accept banana plugs (I don't think it will anyway),

If you need cheap, quick box for that "work car" or the son/nephew/etc that just wants some boom, this is certainly one good way to go. Load up a cheapy driver if you must, or like I said rework it for an 8, and go have some fun with it!

Thanks for the write up. And congrats for enjoying your $13 experiment.

It's within 10%, which is usually good enough for vented enclosures (or crossover components, for that matter)

Was that a limited time deal or something? No link to the deal?

I was also considering adding a new baffle and resizing for an 8". Thanks for the pics and the writeup, Chuck.

They are still $12.99 right now, and I am thinking will remain so until stock is depleted. They are already showing up on fleabay for $25-$30.

Re: Fierce Audio Flat Pack: Build & Review

Mine came today, and I assembled one of them. The stickers indicating where the screws go should be considered more of a "in this general area, buried under the carpet are the pre-drilled holes for your use" than any kind of a "chuck it up and pull the trigger" guide. I spent more time pecking around and missing holes than I did unpacking it, squeezing out glue and folding it up.

They are otherwise reasonably well built sans a couple of internal braces and wholly not unattractive with the recessed baffle and inoffensive carpet color. The recessed baffle can be nice if one wanted to add a fancy grill.

One nice touch was the round-over on the driver side of the slot port terminus. I was not expecting that little detail. Other little details include the spring loaded binding posts, they are located on the back side in one of the lower corners. This is another nice detail for those who like to mount their amps to the back side of their boxes. The rear baffle is also recessed, so if someone were to mount their amp to it, it facilitates a "false floor" effect to hide the wiring etc. There is no obvious top or bottom, so if someone wanted to Siamese a pair of them, simply flip one and run a bunch of screws through one and into the other.

There were some oddball issues with the cut quality - In one spot it looks like the router plunge was a little overzealous before correcting itself and continuing on with the dado. Several burn marks in each of the dado cuts leads me to believe this particular unit was cut near the tool's end of life. The through holes for the screws needed cleaned up on the exit side, quite a bit of material left there which required some manual scraping.

I have a second one to assemble, and prior to doing that I am going to push some drink straws or something through the backside of the pilot holes to avoid excessive pecking and hunting for them.

A pair shipped to Sioux Falls was ~$27. I can't ship the pair anywhere for less than that, they are big and heavy. These are a very good deal for a quickie auto build.
