  • MTM Madness

This is a new build; the 5th set, so have most of the details worked out. Before starting these; over the last couple of years built several 2-ways which sounded very nice, but now really enjoying the umph of the "extra" woofers. Friends and other enthusiast have also been impressed with them. The bass (for such a small size) is fantastic, imaging is quite nice.

The other 4 pairs I used different tweeters, SB26, ScanSpeak D26, and the Dayton RS28f-4 that will be using here (again). I did try the Vifa XT25G30's but really didn't like the lower end of the roll off (mechanical sound) which was in the 2,500hz range.

The speaker layout will be typ. MTM with a tight grouping.

    More to come - soon.

A couple of pics - the front "U" baffles are setting up, good stopping point.

The tweeters were shipped with the truncated plates, not sure I'm going to use them. I'd rather have the center
brace wider than a cool look.
However, I think the best way to make a router guide is cut a circle and add small wedges (pic 2).
Rip small piece to keep them parallel & straight, push that inside while glue drys.

Is the baffle outside of the box? Are you going to do solid wood edges or something?

No No, I was afraid somebody might think that - its more like a dry fit, but some parts are glued.

Gluing up now. Note the double back, which I think really works well to stiffen up a box.

          Did I mention I really like these (O;
cheapo camera won't work inside, so took outside shot.

The white grill is from the WalMart Store - needle point or something (craft).

Going with white oil paint - but need to build another project (same color) so to minimize
          cleanup - Paint thinner - $10bucks a can

What are the woofers being used for this project?

              Re: Mtm madness

Don't want to sound like a one trick pony, but really enjoying the smaller version of the 8" SF's.

One driver in a 12.5 liter box was very nice, but two drivers really sets this apart.

Here is the xo, 16ohm, which also surprised me how well it worked. Didn't lose much db, just turned the volume knob a bit (barely noticeable).

I have other 4ohm xo's for them, which also have the full body, natural sound.

While the is paint drying......here's another version of the same size/volume box. The chambers are separate; these may nudge out a tiny bit more base.
This looks way harder to build than it is:

                Basic Steps:

*cut the top "keystone" shapes, glue back on
                *cut middle support
                *cut "vent strips"
*glue sides on last, trim with flush router bit.

Tools needed - table saw & long reach miter saw is also very helpful.

Both sets of boxes were tuned properly, by semi clamping boxes and trimming as necessary.

The idea here is to build in wood flares into the box, now if you don't tell people they won't even know it's a vented box ;)

                  Re: Mtm madness

That is a novel way to vent. I especially like the flare, though I imagine the calculation for vent length and flare rate would be somewhat complicated.

Are you building a separate set of cabs for every one of the designs?

I wish I could pump out boxes like that.

Not that bad really - - - I'm surprised somebody didn't think of it a long time ago.

Simply semi-build the box, attach what you might think would work with drywall screws, then pop them off for trimming.
I found it's not super sensitive, need to cut 1/8" (x 4) off the backs of the strips to see any F3 change.

I made a bunch of them... Pic of TB woofer with wood tweeter mount. Off topic, but that little driver had some kick!!

How much different is the four ohm cross-over? That is a unique way to port the enclosure , great work!

Well - I really need to give a shout -out to Jay1, he really helped me with several xo's.

That said, this is the most cost friendly of the group - same 8ohm 6.5 SF woofers and a SanSpeak D26 tweeter. The coil is a big deal these days, this works nicely with with a 1.0mh lam inductor.

You'll just have to believe me, these speakers have a room stomping sound to them, with delicate highs of course :D
