  • First Project - Cabrini

This week I started to build my first st of speakers. I am planning on building a set of Overnight Sensations for my brother in-law's dorm room. So, before I mess up some more expensive speaker components I thought I would start out with a little bit more simple and cheap build. I plan on putting these in a garage to listen to music while I build furniture and work on other projects.

So, when i looked at cheaper/easy to build speakers that would be good for a garage I decided on building Johnny Richard's Cabrini.

Bare with me on my build and thread, as both are the first projects on here that are my own!

    Looking forward.

      Re: First Project - Cabrini

So I worked on the speakers a bunch today and got all of the parts cut for the cabinets. I made a rookie (silly) mistake when I realized the back of the horn wouldn't fit through the original hole I made... I cut a round opening to slip the back of the horn through - it fit but then I wouldn't have anywhere to mount the center screws.

To fix the problem I cut out small pieces of MDF, cut out their mirror image on the front of the cabinet and then glued them in place. I followed that up when dry with some wood filler and sanding and good as new! They don't look pretty at all at the moment, but once I finish them the small cosmetic issue will be covered up by the frame of the horn and a nice paint job. I'll attach a picture of my repair below.

The cabrini is a fun little speaker. Your fix should work just fine, though you may want to add a strip behind it for extra insurance. BTW, I made the same mistake my first time.

Interestingly enough, I did the same thing as well. Have fun!
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Thanks for the idea I'll have to do that once I assemble the rest of the cabinet. It's nice to know other people make the same mistakes!

                Crossover assistance:

I've been busy with finals (I've been going back to school for the last 2 years) and a buddies wedding next Thursday-Sunday so I haven't been able to make any progress on the speakers. What I did do was draw out what the crossover should be for the speakers. I've included pictures of the basic crossover and then what I think my final crossover should look like. Apologies in advance for the bad looking drawings! If anyone could check these out to make sure I'm on the right track I would appreciate it.

This week I finished assembling the cabinets, filled all nail holes, finished the crossover and then put on the first two coats of Primer. I really appreciate people who have nice looking crossovers... It is much harder then it looks.

Here are the pictures of the cabinets before primer and after.

I'm hoping to have everything done on these by the end of the weekend. Then on to an Overnight Sensation Build!

If you're still in the mood for experimenting, those piezo tweeters have a decidedly non-flat response that can be cleaned up quite easily and cheaply. See the link below for further information:

Thanks for the info on the piezo replacement. I think I am a little too far along to change the plan now, but a friend is asking me about a pair after seeing them mostly finished last night and it would be fun to experiment with the second pair.

Last night I tested the crossover to make sure everything worked and applied 3 coats of stone spraypaint. I got the finish idea from "fastbike1" on his swope build. While I was waiting for the paint to dry on the Cabrini I made all the cuts for my next build - Overnight Sensation MT.
