I guess I will call this a build log, although other than wrapping the cabinet in some of the PE Black Ash vinyl to match my ONC TMs, there wont be any updates!
First, I want to give a big thumbs up to 2 forum members, Kevin007 and Tom (takitaj) for all their help, even though I loaded their email full.
This project started out last November on a random trip to P-E for an HDMI cable. I already had the OS TMs in some homemade MDF cabinets and 4 extra T-20s that I picked up from Meniscus when they were $8 or 9 each. I knew Paul had put a project together for Meniscus for the center, so while at P-E I grabbed 4 of the B3Ns. Later in December I got all the XO parts and then the project stalled as the holiday hit and I was busy traveling for work. Fast forward to this spring when I thought I finally had a chance to do it; however, the wife had other plans along the lines of moving! So we moved and things stalled again.
This takes us to mid June when I stumbled on Kevin's post of his ONS CC, so I contacted Tom to do a flat pack identical to Kevin's for me since my 10 year old POS craftsman table saw wont cut straight or square to save me. Tom was very responsive in answering all of my questions and we settled on everything. I must say he went far beyond what I expected as he put some thought into the cabinet that I never really expected and I really appreciate it.
Mid July everything showed up at the door and I didn't waste anytime as I wanted to dry-fit the cabinet. I got it out and my 5 year old helper and I test fit everything and man was I excited. Unfortunately something didn't look right. The cutout for the tweeter seemed smaller than I remember the T-20 being, so I grabbed one and just like I thought, it was undersized. I took a couple pics and sent them to Tom and he immediately knew what had happened. When he did Kevin's it was cut for an ND20 tweeer, not the HiVi. We emailed back and forth and the same with Kevin trying to sort all of the details. Kevin even sent me an adjusted crossover that Meniscus sent him. Simple enough, stop at P-E, grab a tweeter and a different resistor and be done with it. Nope! P-E doesnt sell a 6.2 ohm 10 watt resistor, but Meniscus does. And then I'd have to pay $3.XX for shipping a $.59 item.
So I thought about it for a day and started asking some folks at work and found someone with a reliable table saw that I could use for 5 minutes to rip a new front baffle. I got it ripped and broke out the plunge router and jasper jig and trusty ruler and a cheap piece of plywood to figure out the exact settings for the B3N and T-20. Once I got those locked it it was full speed ahead. I got the baffle routed and the box glued.
Now the hard part, the XO. The schematic isnt hard to follow, the lack of real estate inside the cabinet makes for getting it in and the length of wires long enough was tricky! I got it finished up and loosely stuffed last night, brought it in and hooked up.
Again, I cant say enough good things for all the help that Tom and Kevin gave me through the process and I cant blame them if they added me to their email's junk mail filter for all the times I would send an email asking something. Thank you again to both of you.
Now for a couple crappy cell phone camera pics
