ID:	1186906First post here but I have a build thread on htguide too. Figured I would post here as well, seems more active here.

Building full size statements, monitors, & CC. Building the monitors first as this is my first DIY speaker build. Got a bunch of tools from my grandpa so I started about a month ago. Have everything ordered for monitors and have everything cut. Just starting to put them together now. Enjoy and any feedback and tips are great!!!

I really wanted to do the statement monitors and center! I'll keep an eye on your builds. Is that 1 inch mdf? Looks thick in the picture.

Greywarden- good eye! I did the chamfering today and am now getting stuff put together.

Mike220- I'm by no means an expert or even an audiophile. My experience with home audio is pretty much what you see here MDF is 3/4"

Im still pretty new myself to this. I tend to jump in head first and overwhelm myself to see how i can pull through it. Keep us posted, it will be cool to see how they all compare to each other.

Both cabs all put together minus insulation and baffles. I used a little latex calking along the edges just to make sure it's all sealed up. I know the glue is probably good but being my first time I don't really trust myself. It will be several days before I get the drivers and baffles mounted.

Do the crossovers have to be mounted on peg board or is any thin board ok? Also, do ported cabs have to be as air tight as sealed? (Minus the port of course)

Re: Statements, CC, & Monitors build

Put the crossovers on whatever, just be sure to be mindful of adhering/attaching them carefully and well, and make sure inductors are aligned properly.

And yes, ported cabs should be fully sealed (obviously except for the port....)

Oh and the largest round over bit I have is 1/2", is that ok or is the 3/4" needed? I really don't want to buy another bit and the 1/2" collet too.

I will probably round over the whole front baffle and paint it satin black. The rest will get a veneer of some sort or painted a garnet red to match my furnishings (garnet red leather couches). What does everyone think? I do like things that look a little different so I'm game for a lot as long as I can pass it by the wife

Re: Statements, CC, & Monitors build

I am also planning a garnet red/black finish. So I say yes.

A trick I use if I need a slightly larger round over is go deeper than the roundover, so you get that slight square edge, and then carefully sand that off and smooth. A little more leg work but saves the $30-$75.

Well maybe you can do yours first so I can see how it turns out ;)

I may just order the 3/4" bit. Double checked and the largest I have is 3/8" not 1/2". Probably better to build it as intended.

Re: Statements, CC, & Monitors build

The roundover is to reduce edge diffraction. I doubt there's a living set of ears that could tell the difference between a 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 round over. Build away!.....and enjoy.

Ok sweet! Works for me because I will be painting the front, not veneering. I get that veneers take a larger radius better. Any issues with doing the top and bottom of the baffle as well? Just the sides are usually done.

Anyone try some other sort of veneer other that wood? I saw one person (forget who) that did some pretty cool laminate stuff. Wilsonart I think?

You can chamfer the edge, then sand it round. That's what I did on full-sized, Monitors, and the CC Statements. It took about 1 hour for each full-sized Statement enclosure (about 10' of edge to chamfer and sand). Much less for the Monitors. My hearing is not that great in the upper frequencies, so I doubt I could hear the effects of diffraction, but I needed the 3/4" radius so the veneer wouldn't crack when wrapped around the corners.

Statements: "They usually kill the desire to build anything else."
