Re: Statements, CC, & Monitors build

Ha ha, I have heard of that happening to other people too! I am concerned about that a little but my receiver has an automatic turn on level which I set down low so it always starts at a low volume.

And I would agree, audio is always up higher when I'm by myself

Re: Statements, CC, & Monitors build

I would recommend doubling up on the resistors as mine got hot enough to burn. I purchased my full sized set of statements which didn't sound right. My troubleshooting showed that the midrange resistors (mills) had burned up. Not sure if the previous owner realized what happened... Anyways, there were signs of a small fire that burned up the resistor and at least once capacitor... Don't recall the details. I emailed Jim Holtz about it, and although surprised, he advised me to double up on the resistors. I rebuilt the xover with a single Resistors and when I cranked it, the resistor got. Uncomfortably hot...almost to the point it could burn skin. When I did it with doubled resistors, the difference was significant as the resistors never got hot enought to get uncomfortable. I am powering the statements with an Aragon 4004MKII (400 wrmsx2 @4 ohms).
Long story short, I highly recommend doubling up on your resistors.

Well I have them done except the outside finish. They are hooked up in the living room and man do they sound great!!! Best speakers I have heard by far. I am probably going to do a wood print laminate with satin black baffles. Any reason I should go real wood veneer? I figured the laminate might be a bit easier to work with.Click image for larger version

Quick question- Can anyone hear a discernible difference in audio quality between blu-ray and DVD? Also how about loudness? I have to turn DVD's up about 8-10 notches more than a blu-ray. Blu-ray seems to max out low end at a lower volume than DVD's do.

          Just curious

We've got two (pretty) old plain vanilla DVD players (Toshiba & Insignia). The Toshiba plays significantly louder, AND the image is darker. Not something I'd expect with digital media.

Hmm, I'm playing both DVD's and Blu-Ray's on a PS3. But I'm also not playing the same movies on DVD and Blu-Ray. Maybe I should try both versions with the same movie to see if there is a difference.

Regardless, these speakers are outstanding and I think I'm going to build a sub next. I was going to go with a SI 15ht or Dayton Ultimax15, most likely ported. Any suggestions? Size isn't a huge issue but I don't want a monster, sound yes, size no.
