Re: Overnight Sensation knock down kit. With PPG clear

Wow, those look pretty good. I wouldn't feel bad about how those came out at all!

I've had issues with stain getting blotchy a few times myself. Some folks here turned me on to some stuff called 'pre-stain wood conditioner' which goes on before the stain. It penetrates the wood and prevents most blotchyness. Some woods like pine especially get blotchy when stained, impossible to even out, that stuff helps. An example: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Minwax-1-...3#.UnwV0uIv-M8

I have a pair of the same OS flat pack kit in my basement that I am building for my wife's niece. I was going to veneer, but now you have me thinking. I don't think I could get such a nice finish, though. Man, those look nice! Great work.

I got a finish like when building my guitar with nitrocellulose lacquer out of a rattle can...I did the finish 3 years ago and it still looks like glass with no cracks or pealing. I have one tine chip I did when assembling it and the nice thing about lacquer is that is melts into itself..there are no layers. So when I get around to finishing it the repair should make it look flawless again.

The thing is is that polyurethane is probably a better finish for a guitar since poly is more durable than lacquer ...so lacquer might be something to think about as a finish

        Do they sound shiny?

        Because they look shiny.

        Nice job!

Did you use Minwax wood conditioner first? It helps a lot in reducing the blotchiness problems you were having. Essential on soft woods and helpful on hard ones.

Since the thread got bumped, I'll give a little update. It's been over a year they look and sound as good as the day I brought them in. The finish has held up very well. They are currently wall mounted. They seem to work pretty well up like that. Used small monoprice tv mounts.

Yep, it's an ID8 paired up with 2 passive radiators. 70w Dayton plate amp is powering it.
