  • Dual Morel Ultimate 10" subwoofer

~1.7 cubic feet, sealed, Dayton 1000 watt plate amp

Took some creativity with the PEQ on the plate to get it dialed in, but I gotta admit... These are very, very good subwoofers. Very clean, high level of musicality, and plenty of room for abuse. Not super sensitive by any stretch of the imagination, but are able to take gobs of power - the iNuke would be perfect with these.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

    Very nice Johnny!

Look at the size of those voice coils!

      Johnny,

The wiring looks massive. What gauge and type is it?

For a moment there I thought you were using copper tubing as wiring for the subs.

Don't laugh - I saw that in one car audio build. It looked pretty neat too (the subs were inverted so the wiring was outside of the box).

Thanks for sharing your build. I've wanted to read user opinions of these 5"-VC Morel subs for a while. I know they're pretty highly regarded in car audio.

The blue stuff is shredded denim, the other stuff is Blackhole 5.

It looks like that AR buyout cable we had a while back. Huge jacketing and the conductor/insulator/separator was really wide.

Looks good Johnny, those always did model very well in small sealed designs. I'm guessing you've driven them pretty hard? How did they sound at higher levels/excursions? Those surrounds always seemed too flat to me to handle anything beyond the 12.5mm Xmax (and barely that).

Re: Dual Morel Ultimate 10" subwoofer

They are a pair of 10" drivers with 12mm of Xmax, and behave exactly as such. They are capable of fairly prodigious amounts of output relative to lesser drivers. They are not a super-long throw design. The suspension locks up on them at very high excursions, which is part of their ability to take a lot of abuse. They are also capable of getting rid of a lot of heat via the large voice coil and are mechanically very quiet due to their nice frame design.

I did not hammer them too hard, once I got to 100+db/1M that is loud enough for me and they were still very, very nice. Unsettlingly so, to be honest. Having heard bass this clean only a few times before, it still brings a smile to my face when I remember how they sounded. In fact, I was very surprised to see it was playing that loud. I would have guessed low 90's at most. That is a trait I have noticed with good bass before.

For foundation shakers, there are better options out there - which is why I was hesitant to post this design at first. It was not meant to be a 115db wall crusher, which it seems is the current trend to analyze subwoofers.

The design goals for this were to A: Try something that has not been seen on PETT and B: to build a small subwoofer for a nearfield application. We had discussed other drivers prior to him selecting the Morel, but kept coming back to them because of their modeled response in a sealed enclosure.

The result is a very high quality bass out of a relatively dinky enclosure using drivers that have not been discussed much on PETT. Design goals were met.

The car audio guys are right about these, by the way.

Yep- shredded denim is also known as Ultratouch from HD, or Eco-Core from Meniscus. BTW- there is a less expensive pseudo-version of BH5 called Whispermat that is about the same, and cost much less.

I really like the UT as well,

Thanks for the feedback Johnny. I'm so used to all the new sub designs where Xmax is far less than X"mech" (not necessarily bottoming but where it is suspension limited). Sounds like a true music sub and Morel must have the intention for these to be used in multiples due to the 8 ohm coils. I wish we sold the 9" version.

These were really a joy to work with, to be honest.
