  • Chiminea - a ported RSS265HF-04 Build

So I started with a sealed 1ft^3 box but wanted some more authoritative LF SPL. So I took some of my previous Sonotube build ideas and came up with a convertible subwoofer. You can take off the ported extension and put a cap on the hole and it's back to the sealed sub box. Never seen it done before, but someone probably has.

I can also include the Sonosub screenshots showing data entered if anyone is interested. It wasn't as straightforward as a regular Sonosub build as I had to add the volume from the square sub and calculate the volume of the sonotube minus the port tube. Measuring the sub is a challenge. Playing with test tones I was able to get some port noise when the amp is turned up at 25 and 31.5 Hz sine waves, but I don't hear anything abnormal when playing music.

A few more pictures. Sub box is 14"x14"x14-1/2" high and sonotube is 12-3/8" ID. Always measure the sonotubes - they are all different, that's why they can stack them inside one another in the store!

Feel free to review and comment - am using the SPA-250 amp and used 250 watt as the nominal power in Unibox, maybe that was a bit excessive as in a smaller room the gain is only turned up to 1/5? Never heard any cone bottoming or such.

It was a pretty fun build, kind of cool I can always go back to a sealed config by unbolting the ported Sonotube section.

Another thing is you can add a plate amp and use a sonotube smaller in diameter than recommended with this design. Sonosub program suggests 1" all around the driver each side of the sub, so if the only tube you can find is smaller than that, just use a box like this and then there is plenty of room for the driver to breathe - case in point you could use a 12" driver and still use a 12" sonotube.

Thanks for all the great ideas and info received on this forum, thought it was time I posted something.

While the look would not pass my own WAF, I think your approach and solution are fascinating.

        Well done.

This is very innovative and creative. This is part of what makes DIY so great is the ability to be more creative and artistic than big name manufacturers have the flexibility to be. Your design is unique and your fabrication looks very well done. Nice work!

Hi Eric, this is very unique build! I like the stone textured finish. So the RSS265HF is down firing?

J: Thanks! Yes, downfiring. So far it's working out very well! No WAF problems, she is pretty cool like that, even picked out and bought the textured vinyl for me. It's much lighter than an all MDF build. I struggle moving the 3 cu ft cube shaped all MDF sub with 12" driver & amp, this is much easier.
