  • Overnight Sensation CC (in progress)

I have aspirations of building some Statements in the next few months so I thought I would test the DIY waters with a Overnight Sensations Center Ch build from a Meniscus kit (cross-overs assembled).

The project has taken much longer than anticipated but I have also been tinkering with other things in the shop too (built an outfeed/glue-up surface ect..). I am currently finishing the cabinet with plasti-dip (Matte White with a gloss finish coat) to match the Ikea shelving below my TV. I hope to mount the speaker to my TV mount using angle brackets.

More to come but here's what I have:

Other than some finish work touch-up and possible TV under-mounting the speaker is done. Overall I enjoyed the project and learned ALLOT should I venture to build some legit mains.

That is a very good looking speaker. I especially like the detail on the front baffle. Is that a half inch round over?

Thank you It's 1/4". I didn't event test drive the 1/2" as I started on scrap with the 1/4 and liked it. 1/2" MDF is pretty weak too, so I didn't want to remove more material than I had to.

Tonight I mounted the speaker to the TV mount using aluminum angle-brackets and machine screws/washers. This first attempt worked OK but it pitched the speaker forward a bit. The directionality works fine for the seated position but I may revise to level it off..

I should report: I do NOT recommend using plasti-dip as a finish for MDF. I ended up spraying three cans (2 white, 1 Gloss) which resulted in maybe 8 coats. The result looks OK however the finish is easily scratched. It isn't bad enough to mask the drivers and try something new but I will not be going this route again.

Very nice. I think the paint will get harder in a week or so.
The Statements are a big undertaking. Make sure you have plenty of space where they will be placed as they cannot be to close to the rear wall.

Thanks Arlis, I hope you're right regarding the plasti-dip finish. Yeah I have the rear wall space though the side space is a bit tougher where I may only have 12-14".. I'm not in a hurry. This will be my "winter" project so if it takes me 3 months of pecking away here an there, that's fine. I enjoy the time in the shop and look forward to it (I'm a cubical jockey in my 9-5).

Nice job. How do you like the sound? Is speech pretty intelligible through these and easy to understand?

Thanks man, I'm not a "Golden Ear" however this speaker performs very well. Voice duty for TV/Movies is performed easily and clearly. Given the woofer size, the low register isn't there in deep male voices however it blows the pants off any of the sub $500.00 soundbars I've heard (not even close). The sound fills our living room. It really shines as a musical speaker. Affording it the concessions of the low end, music listening is wonderful. We've had a 100 Christmas song album playing for several days most of the day and I regularly sit down to just listen for a while in the midst of holiday preparations ect.. I don't have the OS bookshelves so I don't know how much they fill-in the lower end with their 4" woofers. I'm essentially using it as a soundbar and for this purpose I don't think it can be beat.

Thanks for the feedback. That is good to know. I have 4 B3N's coming within the next few days to build a center channel with (they were on back order).

I am not sure if I will use the HiVi T20 tweeter or have to modify the crossover to use the Dayton ND20 tweeter. I would like to keep the voicing the same as the PE / DIY Sound Group versions which use the ND20. I wonder how much difference there is between the two.

I wonder if Paul Carmody can chime in on this?

The voicing of the T20 and ND20 versions of the Overnight Sensations series is the same, and would blend without problems in a home theater.

Thing is, I never did an ND20 version of the center channel--I was running out of steam at the time. I think I heard that Mark (of Meniscus) may have a XO tweak for the ND20, though.
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?
