  • Newbie Overnight Sensations Build

Hi everybody, I just finished a pair of Overnight Sensation TM speakers. I bought the kit through DIY Sound Group, but a lot of the extras came from PE. The wood finish is flat cut cherry veneer from VeneerSupplies.com, rubbed with Watco Danish Oil. The front baffle is Rust Oleum satin black spray paint. On the back is a 2-pole Neutrik Speakon connector. I was in a hurry to finish them because they are a Christmas gift for someone. The only thing I don't like is the screws holding the baffle, which are zinc plated and I blackened them with a magic marker to save time. I'll have to find some black screws or paint these properly.

I connected them to the QSC RMX 850 pro amp that I normally use for my home theater tower speakers, which can do 200 watts into 8 Ω. I played some music at a moderate level from my Integra pre-amp. The speakers sounded amazing, even without a subwoofer. As others have noticed, these little speakers have a surprisingly full sound.

Much thanks to Paul Carmody for sharing his design with the world.

    Those look really nice.
Someone is getting a great Christmas present.

You could get some flathead socket cap screws for the baffle.

Good going there! I built a pair a couple years ago and love their detail and plush bass. Really quite amazing performance for so little scratch.

Very nice looking pair of speakers. Someone is going to be happy on Christmas!

Thanks for posting, Joel. Very high-quality work; something tells me you have some cabinetry experience.

One thing I've done to hide zinc screws is to take a bunch, stick the pointy end in a piece of cardboard to hold them upright, and spray paint the tops. A few coats of the rattle can of your choice, and you've got black-headed screws (or blue, or white, or whatever color you want). The paint holds on well, unless you're constantly screwing and unscrewing them, in which case it will start to wear off.

Paul, thanks for the advice and the compliment. No, I do not have any cabinetry experience. The flat packs from DIY Sound Group are quite easy to assemble. That was the first time I've ever used veneer. It was surprisingly easy, and now I'm looking for things to veneer around the house with what is leftover from that roll of cherry veneer. ;)

Actually the "MD" in my name refers to Maryland, not my education. I cannot pay attention to one topic long enough to get a doctorate degree.
