  • Small Oak Stereo

    Hello all,

Just finished my first build. It's a small stereo I built for Mom for Christmas. It was a fun project and I learned a lot. I finally finished last night. I added dividers in the enclosure so each speaker is in a compartment that matches its recommended enclosure size (also, because it's a 2 channel speaker, I figured they needed to be divided). I've been listening to the speaker since yesterday. Resonated banjos, fiddles, and saxophones sound great. It definitely comes up short on the low end, but I expected that before I started. It's a missing a little on the high end, but my parents are getting older anyway and I don't think they'll notice.

    Materials used in the project:
    3/4" solid oak
    Early American stain + Waterlox
    Lepai 2 x 15W amp w/ remote, usb, tuner
    Dayton Audio RS100-8 4"
    Logitech Bluetooth receiver

    Things I'm glad I did:
I'm glad I used oak. For such a small non-HiFi speaker, the aesthetics are worth any drop in quality.

    Things I wish I hadn't done:
Bought a non-bridgeable amp for such a small speaker
    Started on the project late

The first pic on the dining room table is of the unfinished speaker. The rest are finished pics.

    Nice job. Great selfless gift.

Very nice looking work! No XO, right?

That is a fairly old looking reel to be putting spider-wire on it...what are you fishing for with it?

Very nice! I think these kind of things make the best gifts. Your own time and thought went into it. I hope the cherish it for what it is. And enjoy some music through it.

I like the detail on the ends of the cabinet, makes it look more like furniture instead of just a plain rectangular box, cool idea!

nice build. if you get a chance, try putting a BSC filter on the outputs to the speakers. take a 0.8 mH inductor and a 4ohm (10w) resistor, twist the leads together (these components are in parallel), and put this in-line with the positive lead. (one filter for each side). for testing, you can put one end in the amp output and twist the positive speaker wire to the other end.

this lowers the overall output but makes it more balanced at lower frequencies -- though it still won't fix low bass, that is, like you noted, a function of such a small cabinet. this made a significant difference in a RS100-8 project i was just working on.
