  • Tubifex Build

This is my first build. I thought that Paul Carmody's Tubifex would be a fun first outing and I was not wrong.

First step was to get PVC. I hit up my friend Rodney Rudd at Rudd Plumbing to see if he had any ends of 6 inch and 4 inch nominal laying around the yard. Not only did he have them, but he offered to cut them to size on their commercial machine. Thank you, Rodney.

Next step, I took Parts Express up on their Christmas discount to fill the parts schedule. Gotta love Parts Express. Merry Christmas.

Next, I checked on what it would take to get the end caps cut as Paul Carmody suggested. I lucked into calling Tyler Wood Works in Troup, Texas. Jerry Mabry was kind enough to quote me a reasonable price to have his CNC pro set up the program and cut the caps, stands and the port tubes. Thanks to Jerry and Kudos to Oley, the CNC magician (and a world-class chili chef). If anyone wants to build a set of Tubifex, call Tyler Wood Works in Troup, Texas as they have the CNC specs set up already.

I took a cue from Eric and used double thickness cardboard for the crossover. Recycled the cardboard from the Parts Express shipping box.

And, a plus, my second go at soldering up a crossover and speaker was completed without a souvenir burn mark on me.

A cut up mattress pad from Walmart supplied the “acoustic foam” for the tubes. A handful of acousti-stuff was inserted behind the woofers.

Since the speakers have great imaging, I wanted a color scheme that would not draw attention to the speakers, at least something that would blend in with the paint scheme in the room (“Amazing Grey”). I chose a Rust -Oleum Satin Gray Granite spray paint. It is a shade darker but the tone is right. The final look is simply form and function, the design illustrates the math.

Here is a finished speaker. This is my first go at a build. I can't get the grin off my face when I listen to them.

On first listening, my youngest loved the quality of the sound. Within a minute, she followed up with “If I get you two stands, may I have the JBLs?”

Thanks again to all who made this possible: Mr. Carmody, Rodney Rudd, Jerry Mabry, Oley, Eric and the all the helpful people at Parts Express.

I like it! Very nice job, especially for a first build! And welcome to the Forum.

Awesome! You nailed it. I'm blown away that this was your first project.

Thank you! I have read through Dr. Toole's book on rooms and acoustics and have now positioned them properly. Thanks for sharing the design. They get rave reviews.

A well written saga of the trials and tribulations of the type most of us Speaker Builders have endured in our road to proficiency.

              We have all been there.

This is in reply to the request about listening impressions.

Since this is my first really good set of speakers, I have no frame of reference.

Everyone who has auditioned the speakers thinks they look cool, and then, after about fifteen seconds, they are listening and not looking at the speakers. The sound sure wraps up people's attention quickly.

For myself, I find myself looking at the spot where the singer or whoever is taking a ride is positioned.

I have repositioned the speakers to fire down the room.

I was just listening to a jazz trio, piano, bass and drums. The drums on the front right seemed to sitting to the outside of the speaker, just right there. This was the first time I had ever heard that from a system. Very intriguing.

12-28 This evening I heard Oliver Nelson The Blues and the Abstract Truth Stolen Moments. I think these speakers will be all I'll want for a good long while.

12-30 Daughters gave the speakers a good, long listen. Both commented how the mixing is very distinct. The sound floats out and focuses someplace in the air. Still the oddest effect so far is for the drum sets on a jazz trio to be distinctly placed outside and to the right of the front right speaker. The room has a odd shape so it may be a function of the refraction. Dunno.

I'd say, the drummer was off to the right a ways when they recorded, and you have a setup now that can resolve that... Even so, that's a difficult feat for a speaker to pull off, placing performers beyond the boundaries. Kudos to Paul on that..

If I hadn't heard the comments of wonderful imaging, I'd say you should pull them out from the back wall farther than in your pics, maybe experiment a bit with spacing from the side walls, etc... to improve their performance. Try it anyway, there might be even better imaging to be had!

Well, its just not me. Other people point to the same area, too. The room is asymmetrical on the right side as you face the speakers.

Are there any accepted formulas or rules of thumb regarding speaker placement? I will move them till they sound the best. Thanks for the suggestion.

Looks amazing. About a month or two ago I was looking at some scrap aluminum tubing at work and was considering making something like that. Maybe I will now!
