Re: Finally finished my Marcato wannabes

So this is a bit of a tangent, but for those of you that have used spikes on largish speakers and thick carpet: how do you fine tune speaker placement / toe in. I find I spend quite a bit of time fine tuning placement / toe in, and I just don't see how I could do it with spikes. Oh, and very nice job on your speakers OP!

Any time you want to trade me lathe work for CNC router work, you just let me know. :P

I like the smooth white finish, how did you go about painting them? Prep work and all?

The finish is actually a textured finish applied with a roller. I attemped a spray paint job but screwed it up so I sanded off all the paint and rolled it on and after and few minutes, I ran the roller over it again. The prep is just lots of sanding and using sheetrock mud for filler. Zinnsers BIN primer. Its not perfect but it looks really good. I think they look really classy, but my wife dont like the white so I get to build another pair. I just need to figure out what other colors she dont like so I can keep this going!

I finnally got to hear the speakers last night. I let them play at a medium volume for 8 hrs while at work yesterday to break them in. Last night I got to turn them up. Now consider that I have an amateur ear and have only owned store bought speakers. the best being a pair of Polk RTi 7s. After I got the placement right and the receiver set up, they came alive! I cant believe how much better they sound then the Polks. These things rock. I listened all night with the subwoofer turned off because these speakers sound so beautiful by theirselves. The base is tight and deep. I listened to the whole Pink Floyd The Wall CD with the volume turned up high. Ive never heard it sound so good. I dont have measuring equipment yet, but I cant imagine them sounding any better. I am hooked on this DIY stuff. I have about $1000 in them (not including labor of course). I dont know what store brand price range they will compete with, but I probably couldnt afford them. Paul Kittinger designed the speaker cabinets and Dan Neubecker did the crossovers. They did a great job and I am very happy with them. I want my next pair to be a 3 way. Thanks everyone again, Mike D.

Unless you're listening to sound tracks with special effects, like explosions, or organ music, there really is no need for a subwoofer--the anechoic f3 predicted by the modeling is 31 Hz and in most music there is essentially no content below 30 Hz. It's great you're liking what you're hearing from them.
