  • Latest horn speaker project.

Building these on a whim since I had the stuff laying around. Three way with two Goldsound 1044DVC 10" WOOFERS (4 ohm coils so will wire series parallel on two woofers for 4 ohm load), Klipsch 7 x 10" tractrix horn with D250X Selenium comp driver, and PE 4.5" elliptical horn/waveguide with EV 2442 comp driver (112db 1w/1m), and modified Klipsch Tangent crossover with autotransformer and resistor ladder padding on tweeter. 48.5"H x 13"W x 17" deep with cherry veneer and solid cherry corner trim pieces. 4" vent 13" long firing out of bottom.

It was a pain matching the veneer on the 45 degree sides. Next build will be with curved sides and one piece of veneer. Finally got it done as good as it was going to get and have started Minwax satin poly application. I'll build solid cherry feet to raise up 3" off floor to allow port to exhaust. A friend may buy them before I finish. Learned a lot of "what not to do building these". Will add grill frame as well

Geez Ken you really need to work on your woodworking skills. Terrible. :D

Those look great. Goldsound? You mean Goldwood?
    Your results may vary.

        Re: Latest horn speaker project.

Thanks guys. Actually these are "GoldSound" woofers which was an outfit out of Englewood, CO which is no longer in business. I have the old paper catalog they issued. Had a lot of EV, JBL, Peerless, Seas stuff. Made some good woofers. Here's a pic of a pair. They have two 4 ohm coils per woofer so I'll wire series parallel for 4 ohm load to try to match mid horn and EV tweeter driver (112db!!) padded down.

Next project for a friend is a pair of Klipsch RF-7ii. He bought the woofers from Klipsch ($160 each) and I had the horn and driver and will build the cabinets. Going to do curved sides with down firing port and probably solid cherry top. Hope I can move them around the shop cause they will be heavy. Click image for larger version

Update. Got the cabinets done and now tweek the crossover. Had to pad down the EV tweeter about 18db to match woofers (and mid padded down 10 db). Sounds very clean. Trying to get some equipment to test. Probably will get a hernia out of this project cause these suckers are heavy!Click image for larger version

I like the solid hardwood edging. That's something i'll have to try some time

Boy, those really are nice looking. I, too, will have to try the solid hardwood edges sometime.
I have a relative abundance of 1" bamboo plywood and think that solid corners might work well, possibly in a contrasting shade.

Those must be going in a fairly big room, with their size and sensitivity. Certainly will be able to rock the house.
              Great job.

              Andy.

Not sure where they are going right now. I'm just building them for fun right now but taking then to a friends house to show off to his friends!!!

The solid edging takes a while to do. I run the sides and top flush to the front then add on a 3/4" thick front baffle that is indented 3/4" from the top and sides. I install and flush trim the veneer to the top and sides the add the 3 pieces around the top and glue/clamp/toenail in place. Then I install the left and right vertical pieces using same method. I leave about a 1/16" overlap over the veneer and then flush trim and sand. Then I roundover the edges and finish with Wipe On poly 7 coats satin. Usually even I can't screw it up!

The contrasting wood is a good idea. I used that on some birdsey maple veneered Large Advent cabinets with walnut trim. Contrast is great. Here's a picClick image for larger version

Really good looking cabs, Ken. Very classy. And it's so good to see somebody building large speakers. I can appreciate the incredible effort it takes to make the smaller speakers sound good because I've built some myself, but my heart is really in big stuff with effortless bass response.

Thanks GD. Being in Arkansas I've heard a lot of Klipsch horn speakers and they are usually BIG! I've got another project now that I'll post in a minute with curved sides with Klipsch RF7 components. I'll use the same cherry veneer I did on these. The curved sides were easier to build than the angled ones and the veneer will be one piece on each side which will be easier. Solid 3/4" cherry top.
