  • Schumakubin MKII build with hammered finish

Well this started last summer with this post:

After seeing pete's diagram i had to build it. I didn't snap too many pictures, but here are a few early ones.

The cabs are 2.5cf with .5 for the mid/tweet. They have 2 window braces per cab. I will start with 2.5 pounds acousta stuff per cab and experiment from there.

Re: Schumakubin MKII build with hammered finish

For the finish i used Rage body filler to fix any nail holes and make the cabs smooth. Then I used several coats of shellac primer from BIN. If you haven't used it before, it is mothers milk as far as mdf goes. No need to do anything with end grain besides hit it a couple a times with primer and sand with 220 grit.

Oh and i forgot the body fillers role. Rage is very sand able, and for this application, perfect as a filler.

The paint is Rustolium hammered finish in silver with 6oz black mixed in to a quart. I went with this color because mike220 did his finalists in silver, and i wanted these to be a little different color. Here is where i give the warning and tricks to make this finish work better.

The primer can be tinted. mine i had them add 300 drops of black so if the paint did have some pinholes, you wouldn't see white poking through. Also this stuff contains Xylene, so paint it outside on a non windy day. If you don't you'll end up higher than a kite. Mike will agree with me. We used the same stuff in winter in a closed garage.

So a little more info for anyone who needs it.

This design uses 10 Dayton DA175-8(PE #295-335) for a pair. The tweeter is the Dayton RS28F-4(#275-140)

          It's what we do!

since i started the MKIIs we have built 4 pairs of 22L ported Tritrix, Finalists, Tarkuseseseses and center, Digger sub, Fusions, and an Anarchy tapped horn. Glad to be finally finishing these bad boys as soon as Meniscus and PE deliver the parts.

Oh and i forgot stands for Finalists and Fusions. Next up Dayton Classic Revivals...if the dome mid ever becomes available.

These things are bass monsters. They are not for late night listening while they baby is asleep. The best way i can describe them is to say they remind me of when i was a kid. They sound better than anything i remember, but remind me of the late 80's when cranking the stereo was the thing to do. These speakers do all the stuff you want well. You know there are big speakers in the room, but are hard pressed to point to them if your eyes are closed. my wife swore the tritrix center was on, and to be honest i got up and checked it myself. At 10' centered, the music comes from dead center. I will be moving these things farther out to see where they sound best, and will report back.

I told Pete that these need to be a kit. Really they do. Not for the people that want flat response, but for the kid in all of us that wants loud speakers for when no one i watching us.

I would love to hear these at InDIYana. I think a few others wouldn't mind either. ;)

I'm trying to get mike to go as I don't travel well. I even got a free suv from enterprise for transport. The problem is, it's both of our wives B-days, so he's worried about repercussions if you know what i mean ;). I'll talk him into it though, it's what i do!

Now as far as how they sound...Large, in the room and everything else that needs to be there is. Pete nailed the design. They literally ended my hobby. What else can i build? I want to bring them and PM'd wolf, so all is good there. They need a way better amp than I have, so the logical choice is bring them to the amp until I get one.

I will say this until I'm blue in the face, or at least until Pete says it's not happening. These need to be a kit. They are as far as I can tell the answer to the small speaker trend we're on. O.K. I know we all love small speakers due to the wife acceptance factor, but we need more avenues for the "wife don't GAF" types. Or for garage use....

Re: Schumakubin MKII build with hammered finish

Maybe Erich at DIYsoundgroup can put together the kit. I know I had a lot of fun using 4 of those woofers in each cabinet. Having the baffle pre-cut sure does help a lot too. But be careful with more power. It's easy to over drive the DA175 down low. I'd keep the amp to no more than 120W unless you put an active high pass on them around 60Hz. I think one reason the DA175 is such a nice little woofer is that the suspension is very compliant. But because of that, it can be driven to the back plate with relative ease.

I'm really glad you like them. That's the most important part. I hope to hear them and other efforts at an upcoming DIY.

Have you actually bottomed one? I had four in my truck as "subs" in sealed boxes and never had an issue. Also I thought I remembered the surround getting tight before it could bottom out?

I haven't bottomed out my 4 speaker models with 200 watts per and a HT receiver crossover at 80 hz. Actually 250 watts per when I had the Yamaha M 80 hooked up. They can get pretty loud.

                              +1

That's the best way to run the DA175. While they can go pretty low on their own, midrange performance suffers. Actively crossing at 80Hz really allows the DA175 to cleanly reproduce the midrange and take all the power their thermal rating allows.
