Re: The Bose beater boom box

The Lepai TA2020 is NOT bridgeable. You'll fry it trying.

There's a thread that you might find useful- Budget T-Amp Shootout -- It's kind of long but start at POST #105 and check out the testing that Ron E did on a few different T-amps. Long story short, you can't expect miracles from any of these budget amps. They do well on 12v and notching up the voltage a little might squeeze an extra watt or so, but you'll probably ramp up the distortion as well. When your SLA battery drops down into the 10v range, you're done. That Lepai is going to sound like crap. You certainly can experiment with Lipo batteries. If you do, let us know what sort of run times you get. Good luck and nice work.

I will be using this for camping and in my shop till I get a new system. It is also a nice sound bar for the bedroom tv. The tone and volume is way more than I need. I can tell that the amp is starving for power with that old battery so I will find a replacement for that next. I do have one question though the box that the lepai came in says 2-8ohm and 9-14.4v. If that's the case then I could run two 2cell lipos batterys to run this.

The only thing is that lipos need a low volt cut off...

What if you swap this for your woofer.
Then you could run both channels to it, right?

Goldwood GW-406D 6-1/2" Poly DVC Subwoofer ShieldedThis woofer provides added versatility over single voice coil woofers by allowing the use of both channels of a stereo amplifier to driver one speaker, and the ability to wire the voice coils in varying configurations. They feature polymer laminated paper cones, treated foam surrounds, and vented pole pieces with back plates. This driver features a fully shielded motor. Note: This woofer has dual 8 ohm voice coils. All parameters below are with the voice coils connected in parallel for a 4 ohm load.

In theory, yes, that would work. However, that Goldwood driver won't sound better than the repurposed Focal driver. I'd get a second amp before chucking the Focal. That's a nice driver.

There's always a trade-off right? That's how these projects go...always. I noticed that you mentioned you got 5 days of run time off of that 17AH SLA. Man, that's really good. I don't think you can do any better than that actually. On the boom boxes I have done, we don't get that sort of run time at all, even on bigger batteries.

You probably already know this, but you can always keep the charger hooked up to the battery as long as it is a multi-stage charger that drops down to trickle mode when the battery is fully charged. That's what I do with mine. So when I don't have to move the Cougar around, I leave the charger hooked up all the time. With your setup, you can probably run the Lepai directly off of the charger (but don't do that). The Lepai only draws like 3A (at full throttle), if I'm not mistaken.

Here's a great multi-stage charger. Battery Tender can't be beat.

I ordered a low volt cut off module. What amp would you all recommend for this focal... crossover???

The spray bed liner was the Dupli-color Bed Armor. It really lays down nice but you have to keep wiping off the nozzle as you spray to keep it from spitting out big globs. It wont fill gaps or holes so do your prep work.

So Im getting ready to solder up my charger and discovered that I have the + and - flipped. so now I have to take the focal out to swap them back. That is why I always check my work with a volt meter!

If you like the sound of the unit as is, I'd leave it alone. Adding a second amp is going to add cost, time and a pretty big re-working of all the wiring you already did. You'd basically need to add an amp that can take the high level (speaker) output from the Lepai, sum the stereo signal and then output a 1-channel amplified signal for the Focal. In other words, you'd need bridgeable 12v amp....like a car amp. Somthing like this perhaps.

BOSS R3002 RIOT 600 Watt 2 Channel MOSFET Car Audio AmplifierIf you're still using your head unit for amplification, you have no idea what you're missing! Head units are often unable to provide the loud, dynamic sound you want, and can distort (or even damage) your speakers at even medium volume levels. That's where the BOSS RIOT Series of amplifiers comes in. Tried-and-true Class AB amplifier topology, 2-ohm stable (for powering a pair of 4-ohm speakers off a single channel), and way more than enough power for even the hungriest door, dash, or deck speaker. The R3002 can also be set up for 2.1 (tri-mode) use to power a pair of stereo speakers and a mono subwoofer (passive crossover values are listed in the manual). BOSS built the RIOT Series amplifiers with advanced features that are usually associated with amplifiers at more than twice the price: thermal and short circuit protection, soft turn-on circuit, remote turn-on/off, nickel-plated low-level and high-level inputs, LED power and protection indicators, all housed in a stealth black anodized aluminum chassis. The R2002 also includes a MOSFET PWM power supply (for 4-ohm bridged-mono operation), a variable 35 to 160 Hz low-pass crossover, selectable fixed 80 Hz high-pass crossover, a variable 0 to 18 dB bass boost, and a remote subwoofer level control for dialing in the perfect amount of bass from the driver's seat. Mounting hardware included.Specifications: • Power output: 2 x 125W RMS (@ 4 ohms), 2 x 300W max (@ 2 ohms), 1 x 600W max (4 ohms bridged-mono) • Frequency response: 9 to 50,000 Hz • Signal-to-ratio: >102 dB • Total harmonic distortion: 0.01% @ RMS power output • Damping factor: >125 • Dimensions (L x H x W): 10.43" x 2.25" x 9.21".

Your run time would drop considerably too, especially with a class A/B amp in the equation. Class-D is the way to go when dealing with batteries, but that adds A LOT more cost to the project.

There's probably a better workaround that may involve a DIY summing circuit. I'd be interested to see if anyone else could come up with a way to keep the Lepai and add a cheap amp module.

Thanks! I wish you could hear it. it sounds better than it looks, I think. I could do a video with my cell phone and hold a piece of paper over the port like some of the other videos out on the web but for me that doesn't show me how good it sounds.
