  • More Shumakubin MKIIs...in Wimbledon White!

    Hey all-

Built a pair of Shumakubin MKIIs in my free time these last few months. It got very hot in LA last week and the seams started to show. Even after tons of bondo and diluted wood glue. Will definitely try the shellac method next time. Could just be my poor cabinetry skills as well.

Many thanks to Pete for the design and Greg (02Lightning) for the cabinet plans. These were the first speakers I've built from scratch so please feel free to constructively criticize any of my methods.

Thanks! They're sounding pretty good. Replaced a pair of BR-1's so quite the difference. Nice wall of sound. Hoping they'll break in a little and sound even better

Re: More Shumakubin MKIIs...in Wimbledon White!

They are spectacular speakers. My build is a couple posts down, not a tread hijack at all:rolleyes:

About burn in, I don't know how long, but Pete told me probably 15-20 hours on the woofs. I bench burned them for a couple days before hand.

Also these have gotta be stuffed. About .5 lb for the mid enclosure, and 2 lbs for the rest.

Most important, If you're going to throw a lot of power at them, limit the bottom end. Talking to Pete about it he says be careful or the woofers will bottom out with bad results.

        Happy listening!

          Stop hijacking me bro

I put 2.5 lbs stuffing in each. Seemed pretty dense. Can it be too dense?

Powered with a denon receiver so things shouldn't get too crazy. I think it's only 105 watts per channel.

MUST RESIST MK2 BUILD......plz stop posting!!!

Nice work. Excellent job for the first time. Kanemack saw my first builds and they were a little rough around the edges. Mainly because I used water based primer on unsealed mdf. Big no-no and I really raised the grain and softened the wood. we ended up just redoing them all.

It can get too dense with fill, just add until the bass starts to drop out. Also your cabs may not be the same size as mine. I went off of Pete's drawing, and extrapolated the dimensions. That took a while!

              My dimensions are 50" x 9 1/4" x 14 1/2".

Nice job. I did the magnets the same way as you, fastbike1 made the following suggestion to me which I'm going to try on my Sunflowers:

Next time drill the holes for the magnets from the back side. Drill to within 1/4" of the front. Invisible, but still works. No tendency to pull out of the glue.

That would work great, but what kind of router bit is it?

See the thread here for the results from the [epic] test thread here. Dave's documented a couple other builds using this method as well.

I saw that thread a while ago. Link to Rockler is dead. I will stop buy and see what they have today. If i find something, I'll post a link and a pic.

Congrats on the completion of your build.

MDF seams are notorious. There's nothing you can do about them other than to miter cut, do Dave's trench, or skin the entire cabinet in Formica using epoxy to glue it down. The last method we've used for a couple cabinets and the painted results are flawless. If you use contact cement to secure the Formica, the seams aren't as clean compared to the epoxy method.

You do need some stuffing to tame internal standing waves. In the 2 cubic feet behind the woofers, 2 pounds of stuffing might be a little excessive. You can probably get away with about 1 pound, but don't go less than that.

Your receiver is probably just about right to keep from over driving the woofers beyond their excursion limits.

I hope the sound is to your liking.

Hey pete. Sounding really good. I'm liking them more every day. Such an even wall of sound.

I'll explore the formica method when I do my center channel. The seams aren't horrible on mine. But definitely noticeable. They were actually flawless in the garage, I moved em in the house, and all of a sudden SEAMS!
