  • Rythmic Audio sub build

I am building their DS1200 kit. In the past I have used mostly solid wood but Iowa winters are DRY and those projects are relegated to the moister basement for 5 months. Therefore, I went with veneer this time and of course I could not go a solid color and wanted to do some diamonds! I'll post the completed sub when finished.

As you can see from the last pic, the diamonds don't quite line up in the back, but it is the back and I am on too much of a budget to buy more veneer because A LOT is wasted to cut the shapes and line up the grain!

      Crazy! Love it!

One cockup over that entire veneer job? I say victory as I didn't notice it until I read it....

Looks cool man! Must have been a lot of work. What are the two species? Was it paperbacked or raw?

I've been obsessed with veneer since I discovered what an amazing selection there is.

ID:	1158035That is a mix of maple and walnut...

I have several other projects (shown below) which use a combination of the same two woods.

Nice! I'm a big fan of contrasting light/dark species.

How did you handle your seams on the diamond project? Veneer tape + clamped in a press or something else?

Oh, I forgot... that is adhesive backed veneer. Once I placed the pieces, I ironed them on as I believe that activates the adhesive a bit better.

First, I cut a piece of poster board to the same size as the sub sides. Then, I marked the center points and connected with a pencil to form the diamond. I then cut the diamond shape of the poster board out using a razor blade and straight edge. Simultaneously, the diamonds for the walnut were formed. I then took those poster board shapes and traced them on the veneer and again cut with a razor and straight edge. I made the straight edges (box edges) of the triangle pieces slightly larger than needed so I had some play in placement and then trimmed the outside edges.
