Thought I would do a build thread for Creative Sound Solutions Criton.2 speaker kit. This is the other MTM that I brought w/ me to Indiana.
The first thing I noticed immediately when I opened the box this kit comes in is how well everything in CSS kits is packaged, everything is thought out so well. The next thing I noticed once I started thumbing through the instruction manual (yes, I did read it :p) is how well everything is covered; everything from different crossover options, to the way the actual construction of the kit is spelled out. It even comes w/ a crossover template... that's a first
. I think any of the CSS kits would be an excellent choice for a first time builder, or for anyone looking to get started in this hobby. From what I've seen, it looks like most of the CSS kits work in the Dayton Audio cabinets, which takes that out of the equation for anyone that doesn't have a lot of woodworking tools.
I put this kit in some Dayton Audio cabinets, which are very well built. This is actually the third pair of Dayton cabinets I've used and short of the magnetic grill mounts (which are fairly simple to fix or to make them work better), are almost perfect cabinets. To do the cutouts for the drivers in the front baffle, I used adhesive backed shelf paper to avoid scratching the baffles which worked very well. Some pictures of the drivers marked out, then pics of the recesses, holes, and tapers cut into the front and rear of the baffles. Also a pic of the baffle installed on the cabinet w/ the crossover installed and the sound dampening material/foam all stuck to the inside (all included w/ the kit).
And some pics of the finished product (on the shelves in my shop)...
Some quick listening impressions... I wasn't sure what to expect from these, this was my first sealed cabinet build that wasn't a subwoofer. I was impressed by their sound, this was a learning experience for me; I need to give sealed cabinets a better look. I still love ribbon tweeters, and these embrace the sharp highs I've come to expect from most ribbon tweeters. At first listen, they almost sounded a bit sibilant, but after I warmed up to them I grew fond of the sharp, detailed highs and they didn't sound sibilant at all; just very detailed and soothing. The bass is very clean, not boomy at all. These are close to being full range, but if you're a bass head you'll probably want to consider running a sub w/ them.

. I do agree, they sound a bit aggressive w/ the regards to the highs but I think that could be tamed w/ a little tweaking.
