  • My Ludicrosity/MWAF2014 entry: Armonicos

Spanish for harmonious, the Armonicos represent my first full on attempt of design and build, start to finish. I wanted something unique in appearance and design, using mid-level priced components, and the ability to be replicated by others. I want to thank Ben for convincing me to try a series crossover design and for his very informative write-ups.

The drivers are the Eclipse W6520R-4 6.5" woofer and SB Acoustics SB26STAC 1"soft dome tweeter. I was introduced to the Eclipse woofer at Jeff Bagby's crossover seminar and felt it to be well worth its moderate cost. Both drivers exhibit a wide flat response with a generous overlap in freq response and low distortion.

The enclosure is formed from a section of 10" diameter PVC pipe. MDF was used to form the top and bottom caps. A 1" thick oak baffle was inlayed for the front. Rustoleum Crimison metallic paint and ebony stain for the front and feet. They are ported using a 2"d aero port down firing and tuned to 42Hz. This gives and f3/6/10 of 39/34/30.

The crossover is a series design (per the ludicrosity rules) and is 2nd order on the woofer, 3rd on the tweeter resulting in BW3, BW5 alignments, respectively. The tweeter is wired in normal polarity. Crossover point is about 1900Hz. I used Solen and Crosscap capacitors. The resistors are Twisted Zistors from Meniscus.

I agreed with Ben with you being first out of the gate in the under $200 catagory that the standard was set high. They sounded fabulous, thumbs up to ya!

Excellent imaging. An almost magical, 3D type sound quality coming from these

speakers! I really enjoyed listening to them again.

I liked them too and scored them high. I think they sounded better here than at Indy.

I thought these sounded fantastic. I was really impressed with the bass, and how well these filled that big room with sound. A+ Chuck.

Thank you all. These are my new reference speaker for 2way designs. I will be building some more WAF friendly enclosures for them soon.

More friendly? I was wondering if you had been inspired by this thread which had the sole goal of designing something the OP's spouse could live with (or perhaps you inspired his - I actually have no idea if Onni's design is original, I suspect there are probably other examples of builds being done this way including ones based on sonotubes):

I suppose it's in the eye of the beholder, but I think they look great and you might have an interested buyer in Sweden ;)

Wow! That is cool. First time I have seen that. It's not that my wife doesn't like the look (she picked the color, but later changed her mind haha) but they do not go with any of our decor. Turn of the century, semi colonial.

Just an FYI, Meniscus has made the Armonicos an available kit! I'm pretty psyched that my first all-on-my-own design has been this well received. http://meniscusaudio.com/armonicos-b...ir-p-1474.html
