Do you mind me asking if the threaded rod is used solely to assemble the three pieces, or do it also serve another purpose?

The threaded rods only serve to hold the box pieces together and to allow easy disassembly, should the woofers ever need replacing. The woofers can't be installed or removed with the box assembled.

Are the placement requirements the same as a regular dipole sub?

I have some 8"s in a sealed cabinet that aren't working out so well. Gaining another 5 or 10 hz in extension and a tiny enclosure might make them a perfect setup for my wife.

I would say probably yes, as the radiation patterns are similar; although not exactly: Whereas a dipole's front/back radiation pattern forms a figure-8, a Ripole's pattern is somewhat cardroidal (heart shaped).

There is a tradeoff, as you would gain extension but lose some efficiency. I myself am not an expert on Ripoles so I will refer you to any and all Ripole related posts on the DIY Audio Forum by a guy that goes by the user name "Rudolf" (he may even be a member here). Specifially; THIS POSTING
